"So you're saying I'm holding you back,"

You sighed, feeling utterly frustrated at the sound of your partner's voice - something that was very unusual. Usually, hearing Michael's voice always brought a smile to your face - except for when you were arguing, obviously.

Just like most individuals in romantic relationships, you despised the idea of constantly arguing with the person you loved - but when the person you loved was Michael Jackson, frequent arguments were bound to be the norm.

Every aspect of your relationship had had to be carefully thought out, right from day one. The relentless media attention had been one of the most predominant reasons for that, and somehow, you both managed to survive. It was far from easy, but there was genuine love between the pair of you, and that made the fight a little more worthwhile.

However, the battle had certainly left its fair share of scars, and the fact that there was a considerable age difference, between the two of you, didn't make things any easier.

If there was anything the press was always scavenging for, it was news that twisted the age difference dynamic between you and Michael. They were always trying to make your bond appear incredibly inappropriate, even though you were both fully-fledged adults.

You'd been together for two years now, but recently things had begun to take a bit of a fall. You were fighting a lot more often, and things that once used to be very easy were now quite difficult.

In the past few months, Michael had become less present in your life, and you had begun to spend more time at work. You worked as a journalist, and usually Michael got on very well with your colleagues, even being invited to nearly every work celebration that was hosted by the management. However, in the recent months, he had become more withdrawn, and you had too.

It was the morning of Christmas Eve, and you had made your way down to Michael's residence to spend a bit of time with him before you showed up for work - but the attempt at quality time had collapsed into a heated argument.

You had asked Michael to come with you to the Christmas party that the office was hosting, that evening, and he had blatantly declined, stating that he had other things to do. You understood that his work was demanding, but you also knew that he had purposely chosen to work that evening, even though he was aware that you would have liked to have him accompany you to the party.

Everyone at the office had hoped to see him as well, for he had become family to them, in some way, but he wasn't even going to consider it.

One thing had led to another, and now it was a full blown argument.

"I never said that you were holding me back, stop putting words into my mouth," you leaned against the granite kitchen counter, staring at Michael as he leaned back against the wall. "What I'm saying is that you've gotten to a point where you're making me feel like I have to choose between you and my work, and-"

"I never said you had to choose," he cut you off. "All I said was that I had no intention of attending the party with you - you're free to attend on your own,"

"I wanted you to be there with me. Everyone would love to see you, and I would be ecstatic to have you there, by my side," you replied. "I now feel as if I have to choose whom I get to spend my Christmas Eve with, and you know that breaks my heart. Michael, I have never asked you to give up your work for me, this is the only time of the year that I have requested your time - why won't you try? It feels like I'm the only one that's trying to keep our relationship together. We've spent the whole year apart, at the rate we've been going - can't you see that we're going nowhere? If we continue like this...we won't have a relationship to try and fix anymore,"
