It's been a few days since the incident where that kid was killed by Christine, I still kept my promise of not telling anyone. And I plan to keep it that way, but I might have to spill the truth if Arnie gets in serious trouble, like getting arrested or something. I was in the living room when my Dad came into the room with the daily newspaper, "You've gotta take a look at this." He said, sitting next to me, "What is it?" I asked, peering over at the newspaper. "Someone got murdered by a Plymouth Fury a few days ago, do you know anything about this?" He asked, I completely froze, how'd they know it was Christine? The place where she killed him was completely dead, it was a ghost town, who else could've seen it? "Why are you asking me?" I blurted out, no other response coming to mind, "Because, your little boyfriend Arnie has that same exact car." He answered, "Well, I don't know anything." I shrugged my shoulders, "You sure?" He asked, crossing his arms. "Dad, just because me and him are dating doesn't mean I did it. Besides, he never lets anyone drive his car." I replied, "You do have a point." He thought to himself. "I'm gonna head to Arnie's house and ask him, if the police already haven't." I mumbled the last part under my breath.
I went to my room and put on some warm clothes, then sighed. I knew it wasn't Arnie, I witnessed the entire thing, Arnie is not guilty. The police better not dive too deep into this case, or Arnie's done for.
The mid-winter air chilled me as I walked on the slippery sidewalk covered in thick ice. It took me about over 10 minutes to get to his house, but when I got there, the police already beat me to it. But I decided to show up anyway. I knocked on the door and breathed deeply, shaking, not from the cold, but from the fear of Arnie's safety. A police officer opened the door, "Can I help you?" He asked, "Yeah, uh, I'm here to see Arnie." I answered, "Do you know him?" He asked, "Mhm, he's my boyfriend." I responded. He stood there thinking for a while, before calling out to the other officers inside his house. "Some girl is here, she's saying that Arnie is her boyfriend." He called out, "That must be Modesta." I heard Regina's voice from the kitchen. They stepped aside and let me in, when I got inside, everyone was in the kitchen. Including Arnie, who looked scared at first, but also glad to see me.
"Thank god you're here." Arnie sighed a deep sigh of relief, but he still looked tense. "I saw the news." I whispered to him, "I did as well, it shocked me." Arnie whispered back. "Your name is Modesta, correct?" One of the officer's asked me, "Yes." I answered, "You could be a helpful subject." He replied. They kept asking Arnie questions like, where was he the night it happened, did he know the person who was killed, e.t.c.
When they asked where I was, I had to lie because I know this might sound stupid or insane, but I'm keeping a secret between me and Christine. "I, uh..." I stuttered out, I was never that good at lying. "Tell the truth, this is a serious matter." He responded, "Well, I did witness the murder. But you wouldn't believe me." I admitted, now Christine was going to get mad at me, but I'd get into serious trouble if I didn't tell anyone. "Tell us everything, no matter how crazy your story sounds." He replied. "Fine, when I saw it happening. There was nobody in the car, I'm not trying to protect anyone from getting arrested. I'm being serious." I said, wincing for what their response would be. They just started laughing, I knew they wouldn't believe me. "This is serious." He finally replied after laughing, "That was the truth." I gulped.
"If that was true, that story sounded so fake." He answered, "Well, that IS the truth." I said, starting to get frustrated. Arnie was also a little upset about the officers, they seemed to be not taking this seriously themselves. Soon they left and said that they would gather as much evidence as they could, then come back later in the week to tell us what they found. Regina offered me a drink to cool me off. "Those officers aren't really good at their job." She said, just as I sipped on the cold milk. "Yeah, I somewhat believe your story." Arnie replied, "Although how crazy it sounds." He added. Hiding the actual truth was hurting me, I wanted to tell Arnie what really happened that night, but who knows what Christine would attempt to do if I did. She'd lose all the trust she had in me, then try killing me all over again. Just when life was doing fine, something like this had to happen.
Arnie told me something earlier that sounded interesting, but the person who Christine killed was one of the people who destroyed his car. And yeah they found out who did it, it was Buddy Repperton and his friends. But I was thinking that Christine was getting revenge for what they did, I wouldn't blame her.
"I'm going to head home and think about this a little more." I sighed, setting down the glass of milk. "Be safe." Regina said as I walked out the kitchen. I stepped out into the chilling air and started walking home. My thoughts were fighting against each other to figure out what really happened that night, it was giving me a massive headache. I opened my front door and stepped inside, feeling relieved due to the heater. But I was also exhausted from all the thinking, so I decided to take a small nap, maybe that'll take my mind off things. After taking off all my winter clothes, I covered up under my blankets and fell into a deep slumber.
It happened again, the sound of a revving engine was coming from outside. I knew exactly who it was, but I was too scared to look out the window. "cOmE oUtSiDe, I kNoW yOu CaN hEaR mE." A distorted voice said from outside, it sounded like a mix of different lyrics from songs put together to create a sentence. I decided that maybe I should go outside anyways, she knows I'm in here anyway. I stepped outside and gulped, "yOu SaId YoU'd KeEp OuR sEcReT." She replied, "They didn't believe me either way." I answered, "aNd I kNoW tHaT yOu WeRe ThInKiNg Of TeLlInG eVeRyOnE tHe TrUtH. tHeY wOuLd'Nt BeLiEvE yOu EvEn If YoU tRiEd." She responded, I swallowed hard before speaking again. "I know, but I'm still keeping the promise." I said. "yOu BeTtEr, BeCaUsE i'M tRuStInG yOu." She said, then she continued to sit there, revving her engine loudly. "aNd YoU wErE rIgHt, I aM kIlLiNg EvErYoNe WhO dEsTrOyEd Me." She replied, I just slowly nodded my head. It was somewhat hard to understand her sometimes, but I could manage.
"I wIlL cOmE bAcK tO yOuR dReAmS, tHaT iS If yOu Do SoMeThInG i DoN't LiKe." She responded, the words wouldn't come out, so I just kept nodding. Soon I woke up in my bed, dazed and confused. Did that really just happen? Did I actually just talk to Christine, like a normal human? I should start being really careful around her, because like she said, she was trusting me, and who knows what she would do if I broke that trust. The secret was still in place, which meant I am not telling anybody about my dream, they'd think I was crazy anyways.
Whoa, see what I did there with Christine at the end? Welp, I'm gonna probably get a lot of chapters done before I even go back to school after Thanksgiving break.
