The solemn beep of the heart monitor came to a hhalt without the power to fuel it, the sudden silence of a missing beat louder than any siren.

And then another part of the noise stopped.

So now,

The silence becoming deafening, its roar now undiminished by the little waves of clocks and moniters, steps and whispers.

Heart beats and shallow breathing.

"The whole hospital has been evacuated, correct? The gas leak went accordingly?" A visious sharp tone clicked out, directed towards the entranced minion, just an innocent older doctor, a husband and father to lovely little family of 3, living just down Morgenson street

"Of course, even the investigators." The man, Daws, bent at a slight bow, eyes hazy and unfocused.

"Then, I....." The towering figure loomed dangerously over Daws, hand morphing into a shiny needle, thin and delicate, but sharper than words. "Have no need of you anymore"

And with an easy flick of the wrist, the doctor was gone. Daws would no longer have to worry about the evil, malevolent being, smiling laxly as he stepped around the poor mans still body to continue his search.

Soul POV

Maka

Maka

Maka

With every breath I took, little swirls of air pushing themselves out of my lungs, one isolated thought kept me from totally shattering.

The ache of loneliness was sharp, a constant reminder that Maka might be dead or hurt, that it was might fault, if I hadn't gotten us wrecked, hadn't fallen asleep at the hospital.

Dome something.

My eyes were dry, my body felt leaden with the weight of this, I don't know what to do..

The click of a lighter startled me, turning my head, Stien was causally lighting a cigarette, like this was just another mission, like nothing happened.

But as I looked closer, I realized his hands were shaking ever so slightly.

I frowned, the putrid smell of burning tobacco not helping my mood.

"Soul, I'm sure....." He started, setting his hand on my shoulder gently.

"Don't." I said harshly, standing up from the cement bench outside the hospital park.

Sighing, I looked at his troubled expression. "Just don't" I felt like now my cool, numb facade was about to slip, like one word could trigger a tsunami.

I walked away, throwing my hands into my pockets fiercely, stomping my way quietly, headed back to our apartment.

Flashback

"Yo Maka!" I tapped on the door of my roommates door.

"Maka, c'mon, we are gonna be later than usual!" I slowly peeked through the door, hoping that there would be no Maka chop to avoid.

"Maka?" I stepped in fully, flicking the lights on, carefully avoiding the hurricane of books and papers laid across the floor.

I spotted Maka's body, just asleep, quietly on a pile of miscellaneous work, jeez, not cool.

I leaned forward, reaching out to her shoulder, when her face scrunched up.

Continuing I shook her shoulder, her head lolled a little bit before lifting up tiredly, her usually pig-tailed hair hanging down and loose with bed head in cute little wavy layers and I felt an immense want to kiss her head and hold her and curl on back to sleep.

"Whuh?" She blinked and I smirked slightly, damn that's adorable.

"We have a mission today, and the train leaves in exactly..." I pulled my Phone out and checked the time "Exactly 29 minutes"

That woke her up,and in a flash, she was running through her closet, tossing random things out on the floor to wear while trying to stuff the last of her supplies in her bulging suitcase.

Sighing, I grabbed a suitable enough outfit and set it on her bed, grinning ever so slightly as she wrestled with her luggage.

"Need some help?" I smirked, and she nodded frantically, grabbing the set outfit and dashing into the bathroom to change while I folded the clothes a little better.

I blushed and folded the last of her underwear, not cool at all Soul.

Now completely done with my task I tapped on the door to the bathroom, looking down at my watch.

"Maka, 19 minutes!" She threw open the door, clad in a black miniskirt, lazy tank top, her usual black trench coat and blonde hair laying perfectly brushed and smooth, I looked away, hiding my slightly pink cheeks, damn, I am too good at this.

"C'mon Soul!" She yelled grabbing her bag and pulling me out the door.

"Hold on Maka! Cool guys don't run! I forgot my keys!" I dashed back in, grabbing my keys and shutting the door, locking it confidentiality behind me.

Maka stood tapping her foot, already had tied her bag to my bike.

Within the next 15 or so minutes I wove in and out between the cars on the highway, breaking speed limits that I was sure Maka was gonna scold me for after, but now, all she wanted was to get on the train on time.

Her delicate arms tightened around my waist as the station grew into view.

Yes! Almost there...... I prayed for the train to wait just another couple of minutes....

I parked my bike along the side of the railway, and grabbed Maka's hand, as we both ran as fast as we could.

"Train 7B for Lingjon Town now departing, all passengers please climb aboard"

I cursed, and started to run harder, chest heaving, legs aching, coming closer to the back end of the steaming train.

With one giant leap, Maka and I caught the back of the caboose by hand, dragging our bags and sore bodies on deck.

A silly giggle came from my left, Maka was laughing like a little girl. "We made it" A sigh of relief pushed pass my lips and I sat up. Maka stood, brushing herself off and lending me a hand to stand.

I sighed, hanging my head heavily in my hands.

I slapped myself on the face rapidly, mopping about can't solve anything.

I stood wiping my face dry, and staring angrily out of the window.

My anger rose in frustration, my arm subconsciously turning into a sharp weapon, she is out there, and she will be found.

My eyes flashed an even darker crimson, I don't know who did this but, they, they will suffer.

But,

I can't do it alone.
