Ameera
Duke came back to his home shortly after the visit to the doctor's. I am currently preparing breakfast for him as it was the next day. He still lay asleep on his bed. When I found out that he lives on a boat, I immediately panicked. I had a fear of big bodies of water. Bad childhood experience caused that. I swallowed my fear at that time and continued with getting Duke comfortable. Maybe I'll find a place in town, it's not like we have to live together, anyways.
"Morning." I jump at the sound of his deep voice and bump my hips against the counter. He raises an eyebrow at my jumpiness and I stutter, "M-morning. Sorry you just startled me is all. Breakfast?"
He nods as he hides a smile with a bite of his lower lip which I found incredibly sexy. Wait, no shut up brain!
"Thank you, Ameera." He whispers before taking the plate from me and sitting down at his makeshift bar.
"Do you take alcohol with all meals?" I ask as he pours himself a glass.
"Yeah, you didn't know that?" He raises his eyebrow again and I shrug, "I do not live with you. I only know little things, but not all. We did not get the chance."
"Then how are we engaged?" He asks in confusion and I bite my lips before replying, "Actually, I have no clue. You are the one that proposed anyway. I just really loved how you were so kind on the inside and how you really have a heart of gold in you. The way you push everyone out but me was kind of special to me. It was like you trusted me since the beginning. We never had the chance to talk about our hobbies or anything because we were too busy saving Haven. But I fell in love with the way you acted around me. Like I was special."
Duke looks at me with his eyes wide and I blush under his gaze. I mentally slap myself for blurting out a bunch of nonsense. In between my internal scoldings, I feel a hand on my arm, "Listen, Ameera, I am sorry. I just do not remember you. I will need time to remember, but there must be a reason I asked you to marry me. I do not usually do that unless it is pretty serious."
I nod before moving away and towards the stairs as he calls out, "Where are you going?"
"I am just going to my apartment to get changed. I have to meet my cousin and sisters today." I say before disappearing into the daylight. I carefully jump across to the dock before clicking down it to land. I dig through my purse to find the cell phone that Sophia gave me. I send a quick message to her saying how I was on my way.
"Hey! Wait up!" I turn to see Duke running towards me at full speed, trying to catch up to me. Groaning, I turn, "Yes, what is wrong?"
"If I am going to figure things out, I need to hang with you." Duke finally catches up to me and swings an arm around my shoulders. I tense under his touch before smiling and nodding, "Sure, but do you really think you are ready for this? I mean you just came out of an accident, Duke."
"Of course, why not? This way, I can try to remember what is going on, too." He presses on and I sigh, knowing he probably won't let go. Shrugging, I lead him to my car that I had gotten on the way here with the girls. It was a small blue honda Fit, 2011 version.
"This is your car?" He asks in a weird way and I nod, "Yes, I love small vehicles! They're like the perfect ones to drive around in."
He shakes his head at me and I nod back, giggling at our exchange a bit.
"You have an interesting laugh. It sounds like something that's tinkling," Duke mumbles as he stares at me in awe, "Are you troubled?"
I sigh and shake my head, "Quite the contrary, actually. I am one of the Absorbers. I take away the troubles along with my family. The Chosen One heals and we absorb. Now, the system is messed up, so we have come to fix it."
