Chapter 3: sente (first move)

I never thought this day would come, but there she stood, as innocent looking as ever.

Her dirty blonde hair perfectly in place,

Just like the weapons she wielded.

Her ice blue eyes, as cold and clear as a snowless winter night,

Perfect depiction of her empty soul.

Smiling at the students at the assembly, her gaze fell on me. While her expression remained, it was clear that her look had sharpened into a slight glare.

Why was Aryan here?!

I took another deep breath, looking away. She had a way of finding me when I didn't want to be found, and forgetting me when I needed someone the most.

That bitch.

Classes had started again after the winter break, somehow even more stressful than before the break. Three thick stacks of paper rested on the desk as each one of my roommates struggled to complete her work.

They never learn, do they?

I turned the last page of the book I had borrowed from the library and stood up from the bean bag, carelessly flipping through the pages once more.

"I'm going to the library again. Don't touch anything," I notified my roommates as I stepped out of the room. It was still chilly, being the first few days of January, but there was no longer a thick blanket of snow covering the campus. Instead, only partially melted snow that had become chunky lined the courtyards and fields.

As I rounded the corner to the library, I saw Diana and Atsko, the new couple, walking in the opposite direction, chatting about the 'new girl'. Atsko didn't seem to enjoy her presence, but Diana thought she seemed perfectly fine.

The whole place was buzzing about the new kid around here, not knowing her just knowing where this place and how to get here could risk the closure of Luna Nova if she wanted it. What more if she was attending classes to harness her magic.

"Oh, and that's Alexandra, she arrived a few months after school started. Kinda irrelevant to you,"

Sigh, what were the odds of meeting Aryan again. Thankfully she turned a blind eye to me, and I was able to enter the library without a confrontation.

My studies in magic music have been slow, mostly because I had been procrastinating throughout the holidays, but I was planning to start today. I had finished reading the whole section of precautionary measures to place when learning. The only place on school grounds I could think of was the ruins, no one to harm and an open-air area. The scroll contained at least 20 lessons and would take me the whole month of January. This was the only time I could practice magic music, before the examinations, and then going back home, having to get assets straight again.

First, a musician should be open-minded. Even the worst or most controversial pieces have beautiful hidden meanings and open emotions, those would be missed if you were to ignore these 'out casted' pieces.

Second. Confidence. What performer could go without confidence? The final addition to tip the scales, you will find it very useful if you are required to play at a place or in a situation you don't normally.

Third, control. Without control, you are a novice. Control is always necessary, no matter where or what you are playing. The amount of control and what you use it for will determine your personal style, and reveal your true nature to an extent.

For your magic, it is part of you, so only you can control it. Tell the surge its aim with confidence, and it will follow through. I find the piece 'flight of a bumblebee' particularly useful in this circumstance, and to harness the physical meaning as well.
