 Chapter 2: ko kin (detention)

"This is not the first time, Miss Hilton. First, you messed up a classroom with wind, next you flooded the corridors, and now setting the classroom on fire?! Detention for a month!"

"It was an accident! I didn't know what I was doing!"

"You better know it by the end of the month, or I'll have to ban you from using a piano or flute in the school."

My dormmates looked at me in bemusement as I sulked face-first into one of the beanbags.

I had asked them what was allowed and disallowed in the detention area, and they had replied as if they went in every month.

Frankly, I think that they went in at least once a month.

Amanda was the most surprised of my 'miraculous feats' thinking I was someone incapable of doing such a thing. In short, she was impressed that I could break rules. The nerve of that girl never fails to leave me shocked.

"I still don't get why you're so sad. It's not like their taking away your scholarship here as a healer in training-".

I glared at Amanda. Music was a part of me, I might break if I was disallowed to ever practice it again. Getting the severity of the topic to me she dropped the subject and conversed about plans to violate another set of rules.

Unlike Constanze or Jasminka, the girl took pride in regularly attending detention, and often dragged the other two in. If a student broke all the rules, it was a necessary precaution to banish the student from school grounds, just what Amanda wanted.

However, there were a multitude of rules to violate, and she still hasn't caused a known murder, disrupted all lessons for a day or destroyed more than one precious record on purpose. There were still at least ten more rules that required a vast set of skills that she just didn't have.

The past month, she convinced me to join them in their late-night escapade to the leyline terminal and tour Glastonbury. Having barely managed to reach back in time for curfew check, it was a wonder that we didn't get caught. The most recent of the trips to town that I refused to join, was for Constanze's restock of spare parts a few days ago. They were caught sneaking back into school grounds and now, would be accompanying me in detention.

Most of my time in that cursed room with no ventilation was spent casting spells on Amanda and getting the reward of a snicker from Jasminka and a joke from Constanze, or sleeping off my all-nighters in the library.

When Professor Chariot and Croix were told to watch us, Croix ended up teaching Constanze how to properly wire a cable so that she could just buy raw materials in bulk and not have to go on so many trips for parts. Chariot ended up falling asleep on Criox's shoulder, due to the stress mid years were giving her, which made the latter a blushing mess.

There was another time when I fell asleep during the detention while in the middle of a spell, and Constanze took it upon herself to stack as many items on me as she could before I woke up, setting a high score of four books, three pencil cases, the teacher's hat and my own wand. The lost look on my face was laughed at until I cast transfiguration spells to slightly change their appearance, giving each one a unique feature of their most hated creature.

Time out of detention was spent researching on magic music, and I spent so much time in the library, I had memorised each column's content, and how they were cross-referenced. As books on magic seemed to branch and reference in every direction, it saved me a lot of time.

Magical music books were scarce, but all seemed to have one thing in common, that there was a scroll on how to control the flare of mana when a witch or wizard talented in the area played an instrument of emotional attachment-
