Morning arrives and I remember it's only Wednesday. Baylor was sick yesterday so he stayed home. Whatever he wanted to ask me before Spanish is either going to wait till tomorrow or I don't even know.
I take a quick shower and get dressed. I pull on a black undershirt and cut-offs over top. My hands rummage through my mounts of tank tops. I find one with I Hate Everyone on the back in black lettering.
Jumping into my car my song comes on. It's Heaven Knows by the Pretty Reckless which is by far one of my favorite songs. I turn up the radio and rock out. Getting to school I turn down the radio, hoping know one heard my weird singing. I've always been insecure of my voice since my ex said, "Are you trying? Cause you sound really bad."
I sit in my car till about 5:20 and see Baylor's truck pull in. My lips curl into a smile as he gets out. I jump out of my own car and hug him. His cologne smells makes me melt in his arms like putty.
"Well, I have something to ask you. It's important," he says. "Close your eyes, please."
I close my eyes and stand there, probably looking like a weirdo. All of a sudden the world around me erupts with Carly Rae Jepson and her Call Me Maybe song. I open my eyes and see Baylor, and another 2 other boys twerking. Boys in football uniforms stand behind them holding signs that say Want To Go To Homecoming?
I gasp and put my hands over my mouth. I can't believe he did this. Baylor turns around and walks over to me. He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a box. He opens it and there lies a necklace. It's silver with a heart that's outlined with gold.
"Will you go to homecoming with me Vanessa Huston?" He asks. I nod and hug him. Before anyone leaves the football players get us in front of them and Baylor asks if we can make a vine out of it. I nod and soon our homecoming moment is on Vine.
Baylor and I walk into school, the necklace around my neck and my cheeks bright red. My teacher taps her foot as I walk in. I look at the clock and I'm 5 minutes late. My happy smile turns into a frown of disappointment.
"It's my fault, Mrs. Jaovanovic," Baylor says. She nods and I guess I'm clear. I can't wait to tell David.
* * *
During gym David and I talked about the proposal to homecoming and he acted like it was cool, but I could see a bit of sadness in his eye. Maybe it was because him and Baylor had plans that night or whatever.
"...you know Vanessa. I don't have a date and homecoming is in a week." I look at David and miss the flying volleyball coming at me.
"Come on Huston!" yells Mrs. Vargas. She's our fat, annoying, elder gym teacher. I don't know how she qualified to be a gym teacher when she can't even run 5 getting without being out of breath.
"Well there are plenty of girls you must know. I've only been here for 3 days," I reply, swating at the volleyball making it fall in front of their worst player.
"Yeah, but there's one in particular." I watch him serve it just in front of the boundary line.
"Then ask her," I say. My face swivels toward the other game and I see the nerds being dominated by the jocks. Sad. We switch sides since we got to 15.
I watch our teacher leave.
"It's not that easy," David says.
"Nice ass, Vanessa!" one of the boys from the other game. I fall for the ball and get pissed off right there.
"Vanessa, stop," David says as I get up.
