The war may have ended but the only sounds he could hear were the cries echoing in the endless battle field. All that he had worked for was a lie. The sound of those gunshots still piercing his mind, he aimlessly wandered on. Never in his life would he ever wish that even his worst enemy go through what he did. His most recent memories flashed through his mind, the war, his friends, loosing contact with his base and worst of all, the betrayal.
Was death finally approaching me? He thought. From time to time he would look around hoping for signs of life, but there was no use. He was alone. Everyone around him was dead or dying. He kept going, though he wasn't sure whether his survival was either a blessing or a curse. This might just be his eternal punishment.
...
His name was Kim Taehyung. At the age of seventeen he joined the army hoping to make his country proud. Never had he realized that two years later he would have to go to war and walk through the wasteland he now wandered. At least he was alive. Tae's top priority right now was to find food, water and shelter. The enemy were still out there hunting down any survivors. I'll just have to be careful. He thought.
He spent several hours walking in that desolate place until he found an abandoned rover. This might be his chance to get out of here. Tae drove on until darkness flooded the sky. He stopped near one of the only remaining trees. He took of his shredded jacket, folded it into a makeshift pillow and lay under the shelter of it. Exhausted, he looked up at the sky for comfort, but the dome over his head was pitch black, not a star shining in the sky. Smoke and other gases given off from all those bombs and other destructive objects had created a veil that may never be lifted. What would his mother say to him? She would clearly be disappointed in her son for being a part of the act that may have destroyed their world.
Mother. Tae thought. He wondered where she was. He hoped she managed to escape in time. He'd left her wanting to join the army, though now he regretted his choice. His mother had brought him and his sister up all by herself. He thought of Seoyeon, his sister all alone. He had to go back to them, the question is...How? As many questions with no answers entered his mind, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
The nightmares were horrible. Every single time he closed his eyes the same terrifying scene replayed over and over again. His comrades dying around him, the gun pressed to his back, the sudden scream and gunshot, looking up to find the killer. The truth had scared him more than what was happening around him. Tae's dream self looked straight into the face of the traitor, and then...
Tae was suddenly woken by shouts in the distance. The morning sun burned high in the sky, the air around him suffocating with heat. He hurried to get out of there, knowing they were most likely the enemy. The shouts drew closer. Tae cursed. They were already here. His only option, he hid behind the tree.
He watched as a hooded figure ran past his tree and a dozen soldiers chased after him. Something seemed quite off about the figure. He seemed too small. Then his hood fell back to reveal a feminine face. That's when he realized that the figure was not a boy, but a young girl. Immediately his army instincts kicked in, he wanted to help her but if he was to get back to his family he had to stay away from trouble. The girl tipped over something and fell. In a second, soldiers surrounded her. Tae bit his lip. He couldn't just leave her. He cursed, shouted a war cry and charged blindly at them.
Oh great, he thought after he realized that he'd just charged into a fight with no weapons at all whatsoever. At least his sudden arrival had stunned the soldiers and stopped them from attacking. Tae took his chance, grabbed the girl by the hand and took off. The soldiers realizing what just happened ran after them. Tae didn't look back and tightened his grip on the girls hand as he ran towards his rover. He helped the girl on and drove like his life depended on it. Well...it did depend on it.
When Tae was sure they'd lost the soldiers he stopped to catch his breath. He turned to look at the girl. She had caramel colored skin and chocolate eyes. Her hair was covered by a scarf and even in the scorching heat she wore a long sleeved shirt and jeans. A Muslim. He thought. The only thing odd about her appearance was that she was covered in bandages. Tae wondered why.
As though she noticed he was looking, she smiled and said "My name is Fathimath Aira"
