That phone call was still fresh in his mind as he sat in her hospital room. Alex had been checking up on Karma since she was out and about all day. He would've gone with her but he was stuck in meetings he couldn't get out of. Alex wished he had gone with her, or made her stay until he was able to tag along because now she was laying in a hospital bed, close to death.
Alex remembered just chatting with her about what the cooks were making for dinner and then all he heard was the sound of screeching tires, glass shattering, and yelling. A car had slammed into the side where Karma was seated, she was lucky she hadn't died on scene of the crash; but now here she was, dying. Alex clutched her hand tightly, their fingers laced together as he kissed her knuckles softly.
"I'm sorry," He whispered and brushed some hair off her forehead. He just wanted her to open her eyes to see them sparkle with life, to see her smile with delight, to hear her call him an idiot again but that she loved him anyways. Anything. He wanted to tell her how much he loved her and then never let her go.
A sound filled the room making Alex's heart stop, because hers did.
"No Karma," his eyes widened, "you can't leave me." His eyes filled with tears as hospital staff rushed in and pushed him out of the room to tend to his dead wife.Alex woke with a start, cold sweat covered his skin as he was breathing heavily. It was just a dream he thought with a sigh of relief. He ran a hand through his hair, the last thing he remembered was laying next to Karma, she had been reading while they were talking quietly. He must've fallen asleep in the middle of it. Alex reached an arm out so he could hold her and calm down knowing she was safe but was greeted by only sheets. He looked over seeing that she wasn't there. Not being fully recovered from the dream, Alex began to panic. He needed to know if she was okay or not. Her side if the bed was messy and still a bit warm so she hadn't been missing for long.
He started to push the covers away as the door to the bedroom was opened, dim light from the hall spilled into the darkness of the room, a tiny silhouette was revealed in the doorway. Alex hurriedly turned on the bedside lamp making a soft light fill the bedroom, a surprised Karma in the doorway.
"Where were you?" He asked as she made her way over.
She climbed back on to the bed next to him, "I went to go get something to drink. I'm sorry I woke you up, I didn't think you'd notice."
Without any warning he pulled her into a tight hug, his face buried in her hair.
"Wow okay, maybe I should get water more often if this is the greeting I'm going to get." She chuckled and hugged him back, wrapping her thin arms around his torso.
He said nothing, just laid down pulling her down with him, and held her as close as he could.
"Alex what's wrong?" She asked softly.
"Nothing dear, I'll tell you in the morning."
She nodded skeptically.
"Goodnight," he said softly, "I love you." He was glad he could still tell her that.
"I love you too," She smiled as he pulled her closer.
He smiled, she had no idea how she could help him by just being with him.Karlex Song of the Chapter ~ Skinny Love, Birdy
