"Karma stop hovering, you're going to choke them with your over protectiveness."
Karma glared at him while she fixed Taylor's dress for the party, "You aren't being helpful,"
Alex rolled his eyes and looked at Tyler who was watching his parents amused, "Tell your mother she's being overly protective."
"Well I'd rather be over protective over not there at all," She said simply.
"Just because you had a horrible childhood doesn't mean you need to be so protective." He chuckled.
She stiffened and her face became emotionless, Alex was mentally kicking himself. He should've just let it go instead of making a comment without thinking, he knew her childhood was a touchy subject that she didn't like talking about, at all.
Karma cleared her throat and stood up straight, "You all just go on in, I'll catch up later." She said and walked out of the room.
Taylor and Tyler looked at their father confused.
He shook his head, "Don't worry about it, you two go in."
Tyler nodded slightly and Taylor grabbed his hand, pulling him into the ballroom.
Alex sighed and walked out in attempts to find Karma, ready to apologize. He walked down the hall, going over in his mind the places she could be, virtually anywhere on the grounds. He sighed and turned the corner, Alex decided he would check where she usually was first. He pushed the doors open to the gardens and peered around. It was dark except for the light coming through the doorway. He walked through the doors, the only sound was the peaceful song of crickets and the gentle rustling of leaves when a breeze blew. He continued to the backside of the gardens and finally spotted her.
Karma was faced away from him, looking out at the outskirts of the palace grounds, her hands holding something. Alex quietly sat next to her but she didn't turn to him and smile like she usually would, she kept her eyes forward.
"I'm sorry," he started, "I really shouldn't have brought up your past."
She sighed and looked down at the object in her hands, it was her necklace she always wore, "Have I ever told you why I always wear this?"
Alex shook his head.
Karma fingered the small heart pendant delicately, "My father gave it to me right before he died, said it was my mother's."
He was surprised at her confession, this was the first time she willingly talked about a piece of her childhood.
"But I hate that woman," she shook her head, "I never wanted to wear it, just throw it away like she did to us. Then my father passed away and this was really the only piece I had left of him." Karma finished quietly.
He wrapped her in a tight hug and she hugged him back with a shaky breath, settling her head in the crook of his neck. And they stayed like that, just holding each other.
"I guess I'm going to have to explain it to the kids now," She said after awhile with a small sigh.
"Tyler's probably busied himself by stuffing himself with food, Taylor is harder to get passed."
She chuckled, "It's alright, they need to know eventually."
He smiled and kissed her forehead, "I love you,"
"I love you more,"
"Nope,"
And with that, they bickered their way back to the ballroom.Karlex Song of the Chapter ~ Airplanes, Local Natives
