OWEN
***

As the day went on I tried seeing if he'd give me any more things to add to the list, but it's like he was being careful. He wasn't necessarily being obvious that he was being careful, but he was.

I wanted to speak to him more at the end of the day, but Trevor and Brian got to me first.

"I can't believe she left the school...I'm not really surprised. She probably couldn't handle the fact that you clearly didn't like her... I didn't know she was that desperate." Brian whines, leaning against the locker beside mine as the person - who's locker that was - was looking at him with irritation.

"I don't know, but I have some things to do so I can't really talk for too long." I tell him as I move Brian to the locker on the other side of me. "I forgot, I have to get my mom a birthday present. I just don't know where anything is."

I sigh in frustration, looking at them curiously.

"Do you guys know any stores or malls? I need a recommendation. I need to go to the mall...I just don't know where to go-."

"I can take you."

I look seeing Demetrius behind me. Trevor and Brian looked away so fast, but I looked at him easily.

"You'll take me to the mall so that I can buy my mom a birthday present?" I repeat my words so that he knows what he's doing.

"Of course. I know where everything is and this is your first time in Texas. You'll want someone to take you places without a problem, right? Not to mention, you can ride in my car again-."

"Again?!" We hear Brian exclaim in shock, and I just smile awkwardly.

I just look at him, seeing him look at me patiently. That's when I shrug as I put my stuff away. Trevor and Brian looked at me like I was crazy for leaving with him, and I might've been. Except I found myself feeling safe around him, I do.

I don't feel like he will do anything to me that will bring me harm. Even yesterday when I was slammed against the door, I didn't feel unsafe.

It's kind of weird how much unsaid trust I have for him.

Beginning to walk off, it was quiet as we walked down the hall. Once we were outside I looked at Demetrius fast, seeing him look at me now.

"So you have good hearing too, huh?"

He laughs as we go to his car. I was highly serious, but I think he was just realizing how much the list was building on him.

I'd laugh to...

"You are very smart, too smart. Just like someone I used to know." He murmurs once we sat in the car. Beginning to start it, I looked around in excitement because his car was nice.

My hands ran along the peanut butter-colored seats, almost wondering if I felt suede too.

"You compare me to this person a lot, someone you 'used to know'. I think I must be informed on them now." I say teasingly, not actually serious. Until he starts to back up out of the parking lot and shrugs.

"Okay."

I look at him awkwardly, because I was just kidding, he didn't have to.

"You don't have to tell me-."

"I want to." He interrupts me, looking at me even though he was driving. When I look back at the road he seemed to get the hint as he looks back forward. "When I was...younger. I knew someone who I...cared about deeply. I wasn't able to ever confess my feelings to this person, so they never knew how I felt."
