Charlotte walks us into the middle of the road.
"Don't do anything. Just watch," She explains as a savage comes by."GURRRGH" The savage grips Charlotte's arm and takes a bite out of it. Charlotte makes an uncomfortable face but after she gets bit she shakes the savage off and kills it.
Blood gushes out of her arm. We all reach for our weapons in realization.
"I don't die to bites," Charlotte starts shaking, "I've watched my entire family die and I couldn't join them," She starts tearing up.
"It's not your fault," I pat her on the back.
"There's a safe house nearby," She sits on the ground, "They won't let me in because I have bites," Charlotte points behind us, I didn't see it at first but there is an area blocked off in that direction, "go save yourself some life," She says as she grabs a gun from her back pocket and blows her brains out.BLAM
Kaylee puts her head in my chest to shield her eyes.
"It's okay babe," I comb through her hair with my fingers. JJ is still staring at the deceased woman.
"Come on guys, this is our first safehouse since the sanctuary," I pull Kaylee away from my chest and whisper into her ear; "We can take that shower you wanted," She smiles."State your name and we can get you set up with a property," The interrogation officer smiles. I think for a minute, we made it. Our first save place since forever.
"Lucas," I stare at the man.
"Well we only have one place available for you and your friends," He gives me a paper, "sign here," I review the paper and sign my name.
"Welcome to Elm, mister Lucas," The man sets me free. This place is so magnificent, air turbines, solar panels, and even individual houses. I wish Joseph was here to see it.
I drop my backpack in my room. Well, me and Kaylee's room. There were only two rooms.
"So, shower?" Kaylee leans on me.
"Shower," I confirm. The water droplets hit my back as Kaylee's hands run down my sides. Her lips crash against mine, her large breasts rub against my body. I set my hand on her cheek and she looks up to my face. I laugh a little.
"You're cute," I groan out those words. Kaylee combs her fingers through my hair.
"How do you feel about this place?" I grab her hands.
"As long as we're together, I feel safe," Kaylee gets excited. I pull in her hands and kiss her again. We get out of the shower. That was the first time I was able to with warm water. It feels relieving, knowing that Kaylee will forever be by my side.
Once again I feel guilty as I stare down myself in the mirror. I might as well have the word sinner written up and down my body. I have killed, my own mother was the cost of my foolish actions.
Joseph once said something to me, something along the lines of,
"You'll hate yourself, Luke. It's going to happen. But you got to live in your skin for hope of a better life," Joseph taught me more in those few weeks than anybody has taught me in a lifetime. He was a good man."Something wrong babe?" Kaylee stands next to me.
"No, just thinking," I look at her reflection in the mirror. She's still nude.I put on my clothes and grab my 1911, shoving it in my pocket. My last memory of Joseph. I take a deep breath in and kiss Kaylee.
"I'm going to the welcoming party, would you join me?" I request.
"I'll come, is JJ going?" She concerns.
"If you want him to," I shrug.I walk outside with wet hair. Kaylee didn't bring JJ. Cold winds strike our faces. We finally get to breathe fresh air.
"We've gathered here today," A crowd of maybe twenty surrounds the podium, "To celebrate the arrival of Lucas, Kaylee, and their apocalypse friend JJ," The mayor of Elm is a short guy, a little plump, he wears a set of glasses and a white shirt. He points to us and we wave.
"Now in the back we brought food and punch, thanks Thomas for helping me set this up," The mayor's words hit my ears and I get excitedKaylee smiles as I glance over to her, knowing she feels the same newfound safety that I do.
I wonder how long it'll last.
