Chapter five
Jamella's pov
I felt us careening over the cliff. It was like everything slowed and my life flashed before my face. I braced myself for the impact as the van fell into the water with a great splash. This river was quite shallow but we were being propelled down it by the strong current. The van hit on a large tree that had fallen into the water, swinging the van close to the riverbank.
I quickly pulled my baby out of the seatbelt, stretched over and grab up my bag. It was too awkward to carry with my baby, so I opened the van door and jumped into the cold rushing water. The water pulled at my legs reaching me at my thighs. The fallen tree creaked as if the current was pushing it with the van. I lifted the bag placing it on my baby, so that he couldn't get out of the car seat he was wiggling out of. Then I lifted the car seat holding it as high as I could above the water and struggled to the water's edge.
It was almost dark and the overhanging trees made it even more difficult to see. I climbed up the bushy riverbank and into the trees. I went some distance away because my son was wiggling to escape the car seat.
Breathing heavily and dripping wet from my breasts down I took the bag off of him and lift him up. Remembering my phone in my bosom I took it out. The nine one one operator was still on the line, it seems she had been talking to me all this while but I wasn't hearing her.
After telling her where I thought I was and what had happened. I tried calling Maniyay on threeway but he wasn't answering. Shots began to fire and I ducked down in fright with my baby. Someone was firing at the truck in the water. The back door I had left open was being rocked a little open by the water piling into the van.
The tree broke and my van was going down the river again. When I began talking into the phone again it went dead, it was soaking wet. Fearing that the person or persons were coming after me. I replace my baby in the car seat and slung the bag over my shoulder. Lifting up the car seat I began walking as fast as I could through the bushes, while trying to gauge where I was in my mind.
I walked for nearly an hour without stopping, I was soaking wet and sweating and my son was fidgeting. Stopping I crouched begind a big tree and fished out his bottle of formula. He sucked hungrily on it until it was finished.
I checked his diaper and lift up the car seat with him again. He cooed sleepily. Something cracked a short distance away and I sped up my walking, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Sirens blared somewhere in the distance as I hoped to find a roadway soon. Ahead of me I saw a few head and tail lights. I went towards the rooadway, but a steep incline cause me to stumbled back down as I tried to get to the road. I try to find another way up. Walking along until I saw somewhere I could try to go up again. After two attempts I made it up.
I dug around hastily in my bag and took out a clean dry dress. Flicking off my blouse, I quickly pulled the dress on over my head, my brazzier was also soaked and I quickly eased out of it. I hauled off my wet pants and had to put back on my wet flat crepe. I didn't really want to throw away my clothes, I was debating as I quickly took off my soaked panty and boogied into a dry one.
The bright lights of a truck came into view and I stepped out to the side of the road and fanned it down. It whisk pass me, stopping a little distance away. I quickly pushed my wet clothes under the bedding of the baby seat, slung the bag over my shoulder and hoisted the baby seat.
I jogged to the door of the truck and the driver looked out at me. "Where are you heading?" He asking glancing into his rearview mirrors.
"Anywhere you are heading." I told him out of breath.
