Chapter one
Jamella's povAfter driving until I was tired, I stopped and parked in a busy town square infront of a coffee shop. I put in my order then went to use the restroom. While sipping from the hot cup of coffee, I began searching on my phone for furnished apartments in this town. The prices were high and I didn't have a job. So I booked into a small motel for two days, while I searched for a job and an apartment at a decent price, but couldn't get either.
By the end of the week I was sleeping in my truck, in an empty parking lot at nights. I was afraid and lonely, but I had no other choice.
I hung up the spare bed spread as best as I could to blot out any prying eyes from the windows and windshields.
Wrapping up myself in the other thick spread, I tried to get comfortable on the back seat. I was awakened early the following morning by a security guard who was checking the parking lot.He warned me not to park here to sleep again and I was left feeling embarrassed. After combing my hair I went to the coffee shop nearby, to get breakfast and use the restroom.
I went job hunting until in the afternoon, discouraged and hopeless I drove unto a road leading into the forest. Parking near a lake I stepped out and leaned against my truck, the place was so quiet and peaceful with birds chirping from branches all around.
Pocketing my truck key and phone I walked off on a trail by the lake, after a while the trail led to a small old dilapidated looking cabin.
The yard was overgrown with weeds and the place seemed utterly abandoned. I walked up to the door and tried to open it but it was locked, a dried up flower pot hung to the side of the small porch and I look inside it and found a rusted key.
After several tries it finally opened, I was surprised to find the inside clean and neat. A mouldy smell hung heavily in the air and I opened the closest window to let in some fresh air.
Checking around I turn on the tap in the bathroom and saw murky water gushing out. "Oh this is bad." I whispered, however before I turned it off I notice the water getting cleaner. The toilet was the same but the water got cleaner after I flushed it twice, there was nothing to show or tell me whom it belonged to. I searched everywhere for a address or name to no avail, I would rent it from them since they were obviously not using it.
I walked back the way to my truck, realizing only then that it was a long walk. After driving to the direction where the cabin was located, I saw that the path was fully overgrown.
Locking back up the cabin I drove back the way I had came and went to the store. I bought cleaning items, air fresheners and food, I also bought petrol for the small generator out in the old log storage.
When I got back I opened all the windows and I cleaned, I took all of the beddings off and put them into a box under the bed. Then I spread mines on it along with my pillows, I went out back for wood and lighted the fire place as the evening chill began to creep in.
I closed back the windows and use the airfreshners, then I went to try the small generator. It did came on and the lights lighted up the whole place, after I filled it with petrol. I turn off all the lights when I went to bed and the next morning I took on the garden. In the kitchen I had to put the small refrigerator outside as it was still smelling awful after I had given it a good clean, having been locked up so long.
It was smelling way better after I gave it another thorough cleaning, the bathroom shower was next as I gave it another thorough cleaning before I took a good shower.
