"Did you find out if he's religious?" snapped Esther on Saturday.
I decided on a white lie. "He's at his grandma's."
She sniffled disapprovingly. Jane and I exchanged looks and by the expression on her face, I knew she knew I lied.
I did feel a bit guilty, but I knew Esther wouldn't tolerate this piece of information and would start a storm of drama. Tolerance just hadn't been part of her upbringing, though I often wish it had been.
To my disappointment, Matthew didn't come on Sunday. I thought maybe he had come back and just forgotten to send word, and I hesitated on going to his house but I knew it would make me look desperate.
I saw Matthew a week later.
