Say that I'm crazy or call me a fool

But last night it seemed that I dreamed about you

When I opened my mouth what came out was a song

And you knew every word and we all sang along

To a melody played on the strings of our souls

And a rhythm that rattled us down to the bone

Our love for eachother will live on forever

In every beat of my proud corazón

Our love for each other will live on forever

In every beat of my proud corazón

Ay mi familia, oiga mi gente

Canten al coro, let it be known

Our love for each other will live on forever

In every beat of my proud corazón

Ay mi familia, oiga mi gente

Canten al coro, let it be known

Our love for each other will live on forever

In every beat of my proud corazón.

15 years later...

Abuelita, who was still a lively and active woman, opened the double doors of the Rivera household. She smiled lovingly at children laughing as they got their faces painted like a skeleton's.

Abuelita proclaimed, "It's Dia de los Muertos once again!"

She turned around to see a now grown-up Miguel hanging the last papel picado that he and his cousin, Rosa, have made.

Abuelita smiled fondly at her grandson. He has grown up to become a very successful and well-beloved musician in Santa Cecilia. She knew he was living the dream he had ever since he was a child.

As Miguel came down the ladder, he noticed his sister, Socorro, dancing in a flowing white and green dress.

Miguel chuckled as he approached Socorro. He said with a small smile,"Dance any longer Socorro and you'll have no energy for the festival."

Socorro blushed. "Lo siento, big brother..."

Miguel was about to ruffle his sister's wavy hair, when he gazed upon a certain papel picado. It was one where a fifteen-year old Mama Coco was dancing happily in the Rivera courtyard.

At that moment, Miguel made a remarkable discovery. Socorro made Miguel think of a young Mama Coco. They both loved dancing and were the same age. The only difference was that Socorro preferred to put her hair in a high ponytail.

Miguel couldn't believe it.

He bent down to put one arm around his sister's shoulder and asked her,"See that dancing girl?"

Socorro nodded with a big smile on her face. She seemed so passionate about dancing. Miguel continued,"That was our great grandmother, Mama Coco."

Socorro found herself saying,"Wow..." She slightly turned her head to look at her brother. "How did she find her passion for dancing?"

Miguel blinked in confusion. "What do you mean?"

Socorro replied as she began to twirl around and around, "Well, her life must've been boring enough to have her find something to do."

Miguel bit his lip when Abuelita could be heard shouting,"Socorro!"

Miguel felt a familiar, uncomfortable feeling in his stomach. The same feeling he got when he was seen at the Mariachi Plaza years ago.

Miguel was determined to defend his little sister. "Abuelita, don't take it the wrong way."

Abuelita sighed sadly. "I suppose it's time Socorro knew about Coco's past."

Socorro felt a huge amount of guilt.

Abuelita walked into the ofrenda room with Socorro and Miguel following close behind.

Abuelita gently grabbed the treasured photo of Mama Imelda, Papa Hector, and Mama Coco. She passed it to her granddaughter who said fondly, "What a lovely picture."

Miguel was very hesitant to say anything.

Socorro looked at her brother in concern when she gazed at Abuelita who began telling the story.

"There once was a family, who loved to sing and dance... However, the husband eventually left Imelda alone with Coco... Imelda's heart was filled with so much pain and hatred, she tore Hector's head in the picture you are holding in your hand, mija..."

Abuelita suddenly nudged her grandson. Miguel knew why. She desperately wanted him to tell the rest of the story.

Miguel continued after taking a deep breath,"Determined to provide her daughter with food, water, and shelter, Mama Imelda learned how to make shoes. Eventually, it grew into a big business."

By the look on Socorro's face, Miguel and Abuelita could tell that she was utterly intrigued.

Socorro said as she continued to look at the old picture," Wow... Mama Imelda was so smart to take immediate action after Hector left."

"I thought that too Socorro, but it turns out..."Abuelita said softly.

Socorro suddenly started to panic, "We need Mama Imelda's help so no one will ever be able to leave the family again!"

Miguel was utterly shocked at what his sister had just said. "What? Socorro, that's crazy!"

Abuelita added in anxiously, "You're overthinking it way too much, mija!"

Socorro glared at her older brother and Abuelita. "If you won't help me out... I'll go to Mama Imelda myself!"

To Miguel's ultimate horror, an angry and determined Socorro started to run away from home!
