CHAPTER 10 – دسواں باب
THE PRINCESS BECOMES A QUEEN
LYANA SMILED AT THE MANY GUESTS. Looking for her mother amongst the crowd. Today was a small dholki ceremony kept for her, seeing as her Nikkah was tomorrow morning. Her parents had gone all out and invited almost everyone the knew. Even now, as she panicked looking for her mother, random aunties stopped her. Kissing her cheeks and congratulating her on the step of her life. Lyana smiled politely thanking them before moving forward. Her brown eyes taking in the surroundings.
Their large home was covered in golden fairylights. Hung from the roof till the middle of the walls. Strings of flowers hung around the staircase, large bouquets placed on every table around the house. The space smelling like flowers. Outside in their lawn, a semi-raised stage had been set. With thick rugs thrown on top and cushions. It was a space for the bride to sit on and get her henna done.
The tall trees in the lawn were covered in fairylights. Hanging from branch to branch. Illuminating the ground. Some lights wrapped around the bark of the tree. Flood lights in yellow, red and green were installed in the soil. Turning the grass bright. Ladies in their heavy suits thronged around the bride. Kissing her cheeks. Happiness all around.
Finally having found her way out of the large crowd of people, Lyana rushed inside her home. Where she knew all the men had gathered. Spotting Nasir standing with the son of her father's client, she ran to him. Her heavy yellow sharara dragging along the ground. The sleeveless yellow kurti fitted and ending above the knees. An orange chunri thrown in her neck. Her shoulder length hair straightened perfectly. The gota of her dress shining under the bright chandeliers.
"Nasir bhai". Lyana patted his back.
Turning around he smiled at his cousin.
"Do you need something Lyana?" He questioned, his tone full of seriousness.
"Do you know where mama is?" She looked at him with hopeful eyes.
"Rania phopho is in the kitchen". He smiled.Lyana nodded, moving fastly towards the large kitchen of her home. Inside the kitchen though, there was a fish market. Waiters and chefs ran around the otherwise large space, fitting petite finger foods into large platter trays. Ordering the men to serve in a particular manner.
The stoves burned bright. Large pots on top as the fire melted the meats and spices into one heavenly union. Standing at the head of the space, like a captain of the ship, her mother screamed like a mad woman. Ensuring that things were all perfect. Amongst the sounds of the loud orders and searing of meats, no one had heard her. Lyana's voice dying out. Bumping into a maid or two, she finally made it to her mother. Tugging at her veil from behind. Rania turned around, looking annoyed. But an instant smile bloomed on her face.
"Lyana is everything alright? You look so out of breath!" Rania looked at her worried.
Lyana simply nodded her head. Resting her face on her mother's arm and hugging her.
"Meri jaan? Shazia bring me a glass of juice please!" Rania turned to one of the house helps.
Thanking Shazia as soon as the glass was in her hand, she rested it against Lyana's lips.
"Drink this. And tell me what happened!" Rania sternly ordered.Finishing the drink in one huge gulp, Lyana rested the glass on the marble island. Turning to her mother.
"Ap andar kia kar rahi hain? Bahir aain. Everyone was looking for you. The henna artists are here as well!" [What are you doing inside? Come outside.] Lyana softly spoke.
Rania sighed in agreement, leaving their trustworthy chef in charge, Rania followed Lyana out to their lawn.Rania smiled at the guests, kissing their cheeks and laughing with everyone. Lyana stood on the side of her mother. Smiling at her. The mother and daughter softly walked to the carpeted stage. Rania helping Lyana take a seat on the floor cushions.
