Why do parents obsess with grades?

They seems to be obsessing over a letter 'A' over their child's mental health. Was it worth the bragging and seeing others face of envy over the child's suffering? The definition of 'Perfection' that every one engrossed themselves in, does it really worth that much?

Being in a Asian household seems to intensify the meaning of perfection, they go beyond that.

A particular girl with a short raven hair stood in front of her overly proud parents that were staring at a piece of paper she had handed them after she got home from school. It was her report card. The scene in front of her was extremely familiar and she didn't like it. With her parents gushing over her perfect grades, she was feeling numb-her mind was empty. She no longer felt the joy of getting good grades and seeing her parents proud as now all of it felt like a chores. She was tired.

"We should call the Watoshi family and see if their children pass their exam!" Her mother informed her father as he nodded in response. She quickly took her phone and started dialing them.

This was normal. Checking others children results like a second nature. The pure joy of hearing others failure were somehow satisfying for them. They felt superior and look down on others.

"Hello, Ms Watoshi! I've received my daughter's results of their final exam and guess what? She passed with flying colours! How about your children?" She beamed happily into the phone. The corner of her lips turn upwards as she fake a sympathy, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that they all fail. I'm sure they can get it the next time! I'm so lucky that my daughter, Asami had passed that extremely difficult exam with flying colours. I'm sure yours will do just fine the next time!"

After a few more words of exchange, she hung up and grin happily. She looked over her 'perfect daughter' and smiled widely like the cheshire cat in The Alice in the wonderland. "My dear Asami, we are so proud of you! I'm sure you will be accepted into the XXX University easily with your grades! The others will be jealous of our success! Right, hun?" She nudged her husband and he agreed with a smirked.

"Oh, they are sure to be fill with jealousy. I can't wait to see their faces!" He laughed along with his wife while Asami stood silently with a blank expression.

This was normal. She thought.

"Alright, enough chit-chat! Asami dear, why don't you go study in your room while I cook dinner." Her mother smile.

".. But the exam are finis-"

"Asami dear." She cuts her off with a forced smile. "Whether there will be an exam or not, you shall never stop studying. Do you understand?"

"....... Yes, mother."

"Wonderful! Now off you go!" She pat on her back with a fake cheerful grin as Asami walked away from them with each heavy footsteps towards her room.

Everyone was shocked and they did tested her a few more extreme questions that only a genius could even solved the problem. She passed all the test.

She stared blankly at the textbooks before angrily shove away from her desk onto the ground in frustration. She leaned her back into the chair and tilt her head up as tears were building up in her eyes that were threatening to fall.

When was the last time she ever stop staring into books?

Suddenly, her phone lit up and it showed a notification of the new updates of 'Tokyo Revengers', a series she really loves.
