The airport was simply a grass strip at the foothills of two identical peaks that perfectly framed the land that lay beneath it. It looked like a painting you would find in the waiting room of a doctors office. Calming but also stunning. I lugged my suitcase off the plane and the pilot pointed me in the direction of the main terminal. A small wooden building with a tin roof. Great! I though as I trudged toward the building. How am I going to get to this McGraw ranch? I stepped inside the “terminal”. A guy sat behind the desk watching reruns of some old western.
“Hello sir?”
He ignored me and turned the volume louder
“Sir?” I asked again
He paused the show and turned toward me
“WHAT DO YOU WANT?” he yelled in my face
I was taken back; nobody in their right mind would EVER talk to me like that in New York.
“Do you know who I am?” I spat back “I am Samantha Ander…” I stopped my self. That was no longer my name.
“Does it look like I care?” he turned his back to me and started the show again.
A tiny bell hung over the door and rang as a man walked through the door that looked like it led from a gravel parking lot. He was handsome to say the least! His dirty blond hair was short and had light waves in it. His eyes dark drown eyes has specks of green in them and when the light hit them they seemed to almost glow. He held up a small piece of paper with Hart printed across it. I smiled and walked toward him. He stuck out his hand and gave me a smile. “Welcome to Amor Springs Miss Hart” He said shaking my hand. He had an accent that sounded familiar but I just couldn’t think of what it was. I picked up my bag awkwardly and prepared to walk out to the parking lot.
“I can take that for you” he swooped in and took my bag.
“Thanks!” I said following him out to the barren parking lot.
A dark blue 1956 Chevy pickup truck was the only car and we headed toward it. I lagged behind a bit stumbling over the gravel in my high-heeled stilettos. He looked over his shoulder and in a cheery tone asked if I was coming. He opened the passenger door for me and I climbed in. He threw my bag in the bed of the truck and climbed in the drivers seat.
“I’m sorry but I didn’t catch your name?” I asked
“Oh sorry ma’am, I’m George. I’m one of Mr. McGraw’s farmhands. He had an emergency so he sent me to come get you.” He replied as he started the truck and turned out of the parking lot and started down the highway.
