The Scream that changed my life.

The rhythm of my heels clicking against the pavement created a wonderful symphony the mixed perfectly with the sounds of the city that never sleeps. The crisp fall air smelled of leaves and the smell of food drifts from nearby restaurants. My Apartment wasn't far from my office and most of my walk was on main streets. I turned onto my street and could see my front door. Suddenly a blood-curtailing scream pierced the night. I froze in fear. What in the world was that? Should I go help? Another scream echoed down the street. I started jogging down the street toward the direction that the screams and pleads for help seemed to be originating from. It took me down a dimly lit ally. A young woman was lying on the ground, a puddle of her own blood created a lake surrounding her body. She looked like she had been abandoned and tear streaks ran down her face that was wincing in pain. She was in dyer need of a doctor. I ran up to her she was sobbing she looked to be 18 and had bruises that covered her hands and dried blood on her face and dark purple marks across her ruby red lips. Blood was dried to her dark red hair making it look almost black.

"Please help me," she said weakly

"What happened?" I asked, "What is your name?"

No reply. Her eyes had closed and I feared the worst. I checked her pulse it was still there but fading fast. I pulled out my phone to call 911 but it was dead. I ran down the ally and started screaming for help as loud as I could. A man almost twice my size came up behind me and grabbed me tightly around my waist and covered my mouth with his hand quickly silencing my screams for help. I thrashed in his arms but his muscular arms wrapped tighter around me like a snake squeezing its pray.

"Don't move darling and you wont end up like your friend in the ally" he whispered drunkly into my ear. The strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

I squirmed but he increased his hold on me. I could hardly breath, he was squeezing me so hard. My lungs burned and my vision started to fade. I heard the faint sound of police sirens close by, than I saw blue and red lights turn the corner at the end of the street. The man tried taking me with him as he turned from the ally. I used my last ounce of energy to move my head and bite the hand that was covering my mouth. The man dropped me and howled out in pain the police where now less than a block away. I lay limp on the ground and watched him run down the sidewalk the bottoms of his shoes pounding the concrete.  The blue and red lights flashed brightly all around me. A felt a hand on my neck checking my pulse. The hand belonged to a paramedic.

" I need a stretcher over here quick," he screamed to his co-worker

"We need to get her to the hospital NOW."

I felt my body being lifted onto a gurney and than I blacked out as I was slid into a waiting ambulance.

I awoke to a dimly lit room my body ached and my head was spinning. I lifted my head and looked around. The room was a calming blue color. Paintings of a beach hung on the walls and flowers from my co-workers and friends had been placed on the table near by my bed. A nurse came into the room. She smiled warmly at me.

"How are you feeling?" She asked warmly.

"I'm okay..." I look around confused. "What happened?" I asked the nurse.

"I don't know the full story but they found you and another girl unresponsive near an ally " the nurse replied.

The vivid images from that night came flooding back into my mind. The young girl laying in a puddle of her own blood and pleading for my help. Running down the ally and that horrible man grabbing me from behind, than the fading image of him running down the sidewalk. I tried to sit up but my body rejected my movements and I screamed out in pain. The nurse rushed to my side.

"Miss Anderson please take it easy you have been in a coma like state for a week."

"A WEEK!!!" I screamed out.

I regained my composure and turned to the nurse.

"How is that other girl that was found with me?" I asked the nurse

"She's in stable condition now" the nurse replied.

I lay back down; at least the girl was okay I though. I felt my eyes get heavy and I drifted to sleep. I had a vivid dream of the girl screaming that awoke me with a start. My face was covered in sweat and I was breathing hard. Just than two men entered my room. One dressed sharply in a dark blue NYPD uniform the other dressed in dress pants and a royal blue polo shirt and a golden US. Marshall badge was connected to his black leather belt.

"Hello Miss, Anderson, my name is officer Jones and this is US. Marshall officer Smith and we would like to have a chat with you"
