5:30am,
I open my eyes the room is still dark but the smell of bacon and cinnamon rolls greets my nose. It brought back fond memories of those Christmas mornings when grandma would get up at 4am and cook the biggest homemade breakfast I've ever seen even to this day. I threw back the covers and threw on some yoga pants and followed my nose down the staircase. I got to the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe. Amy runs around the kitchen preparing a mammoth breakfast fit for an army. Liz sits on a dark oak bar stool at the island playing with some plastic horse figures. I wander into the kitchen and sit next to Liz. She looks up at me and giggles.
"What's so funny?" I ask
"Your hair is a mess" she says and giggles some more.
Amy turns around and shoots a glare at Liz, Her giggles stop. She looks back at me and apologizes, I accept and she hands me one of her horses. It's a beautiful palomino with long blonde hair.
"He's one of my favorites" Liz says
"He's beautiful Liz!" I say and hand her back her horse.
A buzzer goes off and Amy pulls out two pans of breakfast casserole and wraps them in a towel. She finally gets a chance to sit down with us at the island.
"How did you sleep?" Amy asks as she wipes her hands on her apron
"I slept pretty good." I replied
"We have a very busy day today. Sorry you don't have much down time on a working ranch" Amy said
At least it will take my mind off what happened in New York. I thought to myself. Amy handed me some blue jeans and a pair of cowboy boots she sent me and Liz up to go get changed. I went up to my room and ripped apart my suitcase for a shirt to wear. I finally decided on a faded red plaid shirt. We loaded everything in the truck. Amy explained to me that this was the time of year that they had to do branding of any new cattle so we were going out to feed the guys a nice warm breakfast before they had to start a long day. We all jumped in the truck and drove for a while before turning onto a dirt road. We pulled up and grabbed everything out of the truck that Amy had made. Some guys were sitting around a fire making coffee and some were tending to the horses that were tired nearby. I spotted George the guy that had picked me up from the airport. He turned and saw me and a small grin crept across his face. He tipped his hat and winked, I felt my cheeks turn red. Amy looked out at a small hill in the distance a man astride a dark bay gelding was loping toward us. His hat was a faded brown and looked like it had seen better days. His horse and him made quick time covering the distance between the small hill and us. He pulled up right next to the truck and swung his leg over the deep-seated leather saddle. Amy smiled at him and Liz jumped over her mothers lap and hugged the man. Amy looked over at me.
"This is my husband Tyler McGraw." She said
Liz held the horse as he walked over to me and shook my hand.
"Nice to meet you Mr. McGraw" I said
"Just call me Ty," he said with a deep voice.
Amy came over and wrapped him in a hug. It was like seeing the perfect couple. I want that someday, I thought to myself. The other farm hands came over as Ty gave everyone jobs for the day. After the announcements everyone dug into the food. Amy, Liz, And Myself grabbed plates after everyone had eaten. We sat down with some of the farm hands. They were all very friendly and told me stories from the past days work out on the open range. Suddenly a dark figure caught my eye. He walked with a limp, his midnight black hair stuck out in different directions his camo pants had been patched multiple times. He looked over at me. His blue eyes remained me of ice. It sent shivers down my spine. I looked away. I looked back up and he was gone, nowhere to be found. It was very interesting I wanted to find out about this strange man. Ty soon finished his food and rounded up all the farm hands. They mounded their horses. They rode off leaving Amy, Liz, and I to clean up the food.
We jumped back in the truck and headed home after cleaning everything up. I was finally able to see the entire ranch it was beautiful in the daylight. A large wooden barn sat next to the driveway opposite of the house. A round white pen sat next to it. The sound of horses moving around came through the door of the barn. We drove to the house and all carried things into the house. I was exhausted so I excused myself to my room and flopped down on my bed. The soft bedding lulled me to sleep.
