Alessandro

awoke to the sound of soft whimpers. My eyes darted around the room and set on my baby sister who looked like she was having a nightmare.

I got up from the uncomfortable hospital chair and sat down beside her on her bed.

"Bella, wake up," I shook her gently, but that only elicited another scream from her.

"No. Please stop! I'll be good," she cried, unconsciously gripping my hand.

"Bambina, you need to wake up. It's not real," I rubbed soothing circles on her knuckles.

This time she seemed to be able to pull out of it and she jerked awake, sitting straight up, breathing heavily.

I poured her a glass of water and brought it to her lips, since I knew she wouldn't be able to hold the glass in this state.

She gulped down the water and set it on the table beside her. She looked down at her lap, fiddling with her fingers. I could still see tears in her eyes.

I gently hooked two of fingers under her chin and brought it up to meet my eyes, but she looked anywhere but my eyes.

"Look at me," I said, surprisingly softly.

She looked up at me, tears streaming down her beautiful face.

she looked so much like mamá.

"How are you feeling," I asked slowly.

"T-Tired," she stuttered.

is she scared of me...?

"Wha- what happened? Did the-" she trailed off, not knowing how to word her question, so I answered nevertheless.

"You're okay. You... flatlined during the surgery because of drugs in your system," I said, trying not to sound emotionless.

Her eyes widened, but dropped tiredly, as if she was expecting it. "Oh," was all she could get out, which kinda surprised me.

what in hell has this girl been through.

"Giovanni brought clothes for you. You can change, I'll be outside," I gave her the bag.

She took the bag from me and stumbled out of the bed. Before she could make friends with floor, I held her hand and walked her to the bathroom.

"Are you okay? Do want me to call a nurse?"

"N-No. I'll-I'll be fine," she said quietly, limping towards the bathroom.

After a few minutes, she came out and with that, we headed towards the car, after signing the discharge papers.

The drive home was silent. It wasn't an awkward or uncomfortable silence, but rather a comfortable one.
