We don't stand a chance.

You couldn't help it. The doubt that flooded your mind in the midst of battle was as thick as it was justified. How the titans could've possibly gotten this far into the interior, you had no idea. You did know, however, that the loss from this battle would be so devastating it might just leave food for the impoverished majority of humanity. With each heavy drop of rain that fell to the cobblestone far beneath your feet, someone would die.

But it did not matter. And it never will. Because you knew that fighting the titans is what you were born to do. Slaughtering every single titan—making them pay for the suffering they'd caused you—was your sole purpose for walking this Earth. And you had every intention of fulfilling your duty.

You felt your signature confidence return as hot, sticky blood splattered across your neck and chest, sizzling as it evaporated. You wiped your jaw with the back of your arm, gritting your teeth as you shot through the street towards a group of three titans. The rain was relentless, causing you to misjudge the size of the three titans.

You began to back off, bus changed your mind once you noticed Mikasa approaching the same group of titans you were focused on. The two of you could easily take the three, assuming they were all abnormals as they appeared.

You shot the hooks from your ODM gear forward, latching them into the shoulder of the titan nearest you and pulled the trigger, sending you flying towards the beast's nape. You moved your legs to the side, rotating your entire self parallel to the ground thirty feet beneath your feet and stuck your arms above your head. Now nearing your target, you sliced through the titan's nape, your blades leaving a spray of thick blood in their paths.

Just as you felt your blades and hook release from the titan's shoulders, Mikasa zipped in front of you, catching your attention. Her shiny black hair glittered in the rain, complimenting those steely silver eyes you longed to meet.

"Y/N!!" Mikasa screamed suddenly, ripping you from your thoughts. But it was too late. You shouted in agony as massive teeth collided with your bicep, audibly crushing your arm. You frantically swung your free arm at the titan, slicing a gash from the tip of his fat nose to his gums. The titan's bite loosened slightly, and you took your chance to escape, only partially aware of the flesh on your arm being torn from bone.

You cried out in pain as your vision spun and a breeze blew across your face. You felt as though you might be dreaming, as if something was wrong, but you couldn't quite tell what it was. A new problem arose when you felt your back smash into stone and your vision faded to black.

——

The first thing you noticed when you woke up was the devastating pain in your arm. Your eyes adjusted to a dim yellow light and you found yourself sitting against a stone wall in a basement of sorts. Members of the 104th and a few other groups of soldiers hurried about frantically, carrying cans of compressed air back and forth across the room.

You gasped loudly as a wave of pain passed from your arm to your shoulder, blurring your vision with pain. You snapped your head toward your left arm to see Mikasa crouched beside you, carefully wrapping your destroyed and bloodied arm. The blood was seeping through the bandage, which had clearly been double-wrapped to prevent the blood from escaping.

You gritted your teeth in pain and worry as Mikasa adjusted a bit of the bandage. Though your were in immense pain, your spirits were lifted by Mikasa being the one to bandage your arm.

"I know, I know," she said sympathetically, "I tried to find something to relieve the pain but the medics were all either dead or untrustworthy."

You chuckled, "Untrustworthy?" you asked, raising your eyebrows.

"Yes," Mikasa replied stoically, not making eye contact. Your attraction to her began to catch up to the pain from your arm, significantly nullifying the agony.

"How so?" you asked, smirking, "Is it that you don't want to entrust my life to someone else? Or that you want to be the one to protect me?" you teased. To your surprise, Mikasa's cheeks became dusted with pink.

"Whatever you need to tell yourself," she countered coyly, looking up at you from your arm. Your gazes hovered together for a moment, tight with the electric tension between you.

After a moment, you spoke up. "Thanks for saving me," you told her in a tone you presumed wouldn't break the tension.

"It's just what anyone would do," Mikasa smiled nonchalantly and began picking up the extra bandages, playing off whatever had happened mere seconds ago.

"Is it?" you asked, taking your last chance to start something before she stood up. "Would 'just a friend' also insist on wasting other people's time to bandage my arm?"

"Of course not," Mikasa answered. She had nothing more to say, but she did not leave.

"Would 'just friends'..." you voice trailed off as you glanced down to her lips and back to her eyes. You began to lean towards her, your eyes fluttering closed along with hers as your lips met.

The pain in your newly bandaged arm was forgotten as your brought your bloodied hands to the side of Mikasa's face, fulling melting into the kiss. You felt Mikasa's hands at your sides as you pulled her closer to her.

Your thumb moved back and forth across her cheekbone as you pulled away for a moment and made eye contact. Her silver eyes glinted in the yellowish light of the basement before you heard footsteps nearing the two of you.

"You know," you heard Reiner begin in a passive-aggressive tone, "everyone else is out here working out asses off while the two of you—"

You kept your eyes on Mikasa and presented Reiner with a crimson red middle finger, kissing Mikasa once more. Finally, you stood up and held out your good arm to Mikasa, which she grabbed and pulled herself up with.

You rolled your eyes and turned to the Scout to your right. "Now how can we help you, Reiner?"
