Chapter 38: Work Smarter, Not Harder. It Works Since I Graduated and I'm Dumb

It wasn't often someone could sneak up on me. In fact, I considered it to be one of my superpowers; some sort of sixth sense when someone was coming close to me. I didn't know if it was because I didn't like being scared or because my superiority complex made me want to always have the upper hand.

So when someone suddenly said, "Don't tell me you're going to sleep in here again," and caused me to jump, I was worried my super power had faded.

I looked over at the stable door, seeing Sawyer leaning in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. "Don't scare me like that."

"I don't see how I could have scared you when you normally sense my presence whenever I'm near you," Sawyer said.

       I nodded. "It's like a superpower."

"Or you just get horny whenever I'm near you."

"Hmm... You know, that's better than the reasons I came up with."

       "And what were your reasons?"

"It's either I don't like being scared or my superiority complex makes me always want to have the upper hand."

Sawyer snorted. "I'm glad you're finally admitting to having a superiority complex."

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. "I don't think I ever denied it. Why would I deny something that's so obviously true?"

Sawyer just chuckled as he walked over to me, crouching down beside me to see what I was doing. However, he wouldn't really guess from all the wires that was strewn all over the place. "You never answered my question."

I picked up one of the wires and examined it before deciding I needed a different one. "To be fair, you didn't really form it as a question."

Sawyer gave me a playful nudge at my teasing. "So...?"

I shook my head. "No, I'm not going to sleep here for the night. I want to, but the hay stacks aren't exactly comfortable and my back is still healing. If I want to be able to ride Paint again, I need to sleep in a very comfortable bed."

"Okay, so that leads to my next question," Sawyer said. "What exactly are you doing with all these wires?"

"So even though we have cameras and a security system set up, I'm still a bit paranoid that whoever marked Paint will come by at night to take him away," I said. "So I'm setting up a silent alarm. They won't hear it go off, but it will set off a very loud alarm on my phone, giving me the chance to come here and beat the shit out of them while Paint is being a very stubborn horse."

Sawyer sighed. "I told you, horse sedatives are a thing. If they know about Paint's temperament, they'll definitely use it on him to be able to take him out of here without any problem."

I glared at my fiance. "Thanks for reminding me. I would rather not think about some criminals sedating my horse."

"Hey, I'm just reminding you so if your alarm system does work, you'll know to come even faster because Paint won't be fighting back," Sawyer said. He looked at the alarm system I was setting up. "How do you even know how to do this. No offence, but I thought you--"

"Are stupid?" I interrupted. "Wow, that's so rude of you to say that."

"Okay, one, I didn't say that," Sawyer said. "Two, I wasn't going to say that. I was going to say I thought you weren't that interested in this kind of thing. You know, considering you were going to take a class for it in high school but you decided to take a free period instead."

"So you're telling me you would rather take a class than have a free period?"

       "Fair enough."

"I'm not exactly too interested in this anyway. I just bought a kit. The instructions are easy enough for me to follow."

Sawyer stayed with me until I finished with the silent alarm. Now that it was set up, there were only two things to do; hide the wires so nobody would see them and then test it out to see if it went out off on my phone.

Sawyer helped me hide the wires before we tested out the security system and sure enough, it worked. In fact, it worked so well that Paint started freaking out because he did not like how loud the alarm was on my phone. It took me some time to calm him down but once he was calm, he started eating the hay that was in his stable as if nothing happened.

Now that the alarm system was working, it was time for me to finally get some proper rest in my bedroom. I stretched before looking at Sawyer. "You know, my legs are very sore. I don't think I can walk all the way to the house. It's just... so far away. If only I had a very strong fiance with beautiful muscles who can bring me to the house."

Sawyer laughed slightly before he turned around so his back was facing me. "Alright, hop on."

       "Wait, seriously?"

"I wouldn't be offering if I wasn't serious. Besides, it's a good work out carrying you all the way to the house. Now are you going to get on or are you going to walk to the house?"

I hopped on Sawyer's back, and his arms immediately hooked under my knees to prevent me from falling. "I have an idea," I said as Sawyer started walking to the house. "On our wedding, you should carry me like this down the aisle."

"Yeah, that's not happening," Sawyer said. "But I will gladly carry you like this over the threshold of our house when it's built."

"I'll take what I can get."

The moment we get into our bedroom, I flopped onto the bed, wanting to sleep for an eternity. Not because I was awake for hours on end, but simply because I enjoyed sleeping, especially whenever I was sleeping cuddled up to Sawyer.

I know we had been sharing a bed for a long time now, even before we started dating, but I couldn't help but think what it was going to be like to wake up next to him when we were married.

We didn't have a date for the wedding yet since we were putting all of our money towards the house, but still. I couldn't wait to marry Sawyer.

my dog also starts eating her food whenever she's pretending nothing happened. like she'll be somewhere she's not allowed to be in (like the laundry room) and once we catch her, she'll run to her food bowl and start eating as if she wasn't doing anything.

i love her so much.
