Chapter 6: Bond or Bone? (Sawyer if you're reading this, please sleep with me)
The day before the first competition, Lauri thought it would help calm our nerves to take all of us on the team out to eat. As much as I was going to love going out for dinner, I was also a bit disappointed because I wanted to bone Sawyer.
Even though he was probably going to say no and then go to sleep early, most likely to go on an early morning jog since I may have botched the bet.
At least I lasted two hours. I was proud of myself just for that.
For some reason, Sawyer has seemed a bit... quiet recently. And a bit annoyed. I wanted to ask what was wrong, but I didn't want to annoy him even more.
Although, I was probably doing that right now because as we were waiting for our food, I was resting my cheek on his arm, staring up at him. "Pay attention to me," I said in a whiny voice.
"That's all I've been doing," Sawyer said.
"Pay attention to me more."
"So do you want me to just stare at you the whole time?"
"Yes, please."
"Not happening."
I huffed and moved away from him, crossing my arms over my chest. "Whatever." After a few moments, I looked back at him. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Why do you ask?" Sawyer asked.
I shrugged. "You've just seemed very annoyed recently. Was it something I did? I promise I won't annoy you. More than I already do."
"No, it wasn't you," Sawyer said. "I've gotten used to you constantly annoying me. And Kitty."
"I heard that," Kitty said from where she was sitting, which was on the other side of me so it was no surprise that she heard him.
"No, really?" Sawyer said sarcastically. "I absolutely had no idea, even though you're sitting two seats away from me. Could have fooled me."
Kitty glared at Sawyer before looking away from him, pulling out her phone out of her pocket to find something to pass time while waiting for the food.
"So if it's not me, and if it's not Kitty, then why are you so annoyed?" I asked.
Since we were at a table with the whole team, Sawyer lowered his voice so nobody would hear the conversation. Everyone was deep into their own conversations to probably listen in on ours, but we could never be too safe with a group this big. "It's what that Sera girl said."
I furrowed my eyebrows, trying to remember what Sera said. I had to admit, I sort of just tuned everybody out unless they were Sawyer.
Was I hopelessly in love? Yes. Was it a bad thing? Nope, but the way I handled it needed work.
"You're going to have to remind me what she said," I said. "Because all I was thinking about was how hot you look shirtless."
Sawyer sighed. "Of course that was. She said that your coach isn't doing a good job."
"Oh, right," I said. "Well, forget that. You are doing a good job. I mean, yeah, I am awesome, but I didn't get this far all by myself. And you knew exactly how I could improve. I kicked ass the next run through."
"You missed a jump."
"I still kicked ass."
"Not really. Kicking ass would be clearing all the jumps."
"Are you trying to put me down?"
"No, I'm just trying to keep your head from exploding with that ego of yours."
"Oh, come on, my ego isn't too big. But you know what is big?"
"Don't even finish that," Sawyer said. "Even though I don't think anyone is listening, you shouldn't be talking like that with all these people around."
"Fine, I'll control myself."
I just hope the dinner wasn't going to take too long because I didn't think I could hold myself back for too long.
When the food came, I admittedly started eating a bit too fast. As grateful as I was that Lauri was treating all of us to dinner, I just wanted to get back to the hotel room to relax before the nerves started to rush in.
And because I was hoping I would be able to seduce Sawyer, but probably not. I was probably just going to lie down as soon as I got back.
"You should probably slow down a bit," Kitty said when she noticed I was eating a bit too fast. "We don't have a cross-country replacement so if you choke and die, we'll be a member short."
I swallowed the food that was in my mouth before saying, "I'm glad that if I die, I know the only thing you'll care about is not having three cross-country racers." However, I did slow down my eating a bit. Even if I finished quickly, it wouldn't be polite for me to leave the dinner right away.
I still ended up being the first one done eating, so I just leaned back into my seat. Sawyer looked at me. "I heard Lauri talking about getting dessert. You gonna want some?"
I bit my bottom lip, wanting to say something so bad but I promised Sawyer I would control myself.
Since I wasn't saying anything, Sawyer asked, "What is it?"
"I wanna say something," I said. "Something..." I lowered my voice. "Sexual."
Sawyer sighed. "I should have figured. So is that a no for dessert or...?"
"It will probably be best for me to skip on dessert," I said. "I'm probably going to get really nervous soon just thinking about the competition, and I don't want to be nervous when I just ate dessert."
"Fair enough," Sawyer said.
When everyone finished eating and Lauri asked if anyone wanted dessert, most people declined. I didn't blame them.
Lauri said for those who didn't want to have dessert, we were free to leave now if we wanted to go rest. Sawyer wasn't having dessert either, so the two of us decided to head back to the hotel.
As soon as we got to our hotel room, Sawyer ended up doing something that completely shocked me. Once the door was closed, he gently pushed me up against it before leaning down and pressing his lips on mine.
I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him closer to me. Sawyer then pulled away from me. I thought he was finished kissing me and only wanted to tease me like the mean person he was, but he grabbed my hand and started pulling me to the bed.
"So is this a bad time to say that at the restaurant, I wanted to say that I want you for dessert?" I asked.
"Yeah, I kind of figured that's what it was," Sawyer said. "And you are getting your wish."
"Wow, I never thought you would be the sexual one."
"Shut up," Sawyer said before kissing me again.
