Chapter Eleven: Murder and Some Dinner Too
"So is anybody free friday night? I found an awesome group deal for Club Frisbee tickets!" Hunter McNamara announced proudly at lunch.
"Cool , cool," Susan said wanly, tapping away at her phone. I picked halfheartedly at my food, while Annie flipped the next page of the book in her hands.
"Hello? Did anyone hear what I said? Group deal for Club Frisbee, each of us pay quarter the price of a regular ticket!" Hunter enthused and Annie was the first to bolt up in attention.
"What did you just say?" She tapped on the table in front of Susan and I, causing us both to look up.
"That is not true, let me see that right now!" Susan reached across and snatched her brother's phone so Annie and I could see too.
"It's real," I nodded.
Susan glanced over her shoulder and lowered her voice, "We cannot make this loud, how did you get cheap Club Frisbee tickets?"
"It's only cheap if we get six people," Hunter pointed out and turned to me with an elbow on the lunch table, "do you think Angelo can come?"
I faltered, looking around and spinning the ring on my thumb, "Wh- what makes you think I'd know?" Did anybody else think like that? That won't sit right with Hale whenever it got round to him.
"Annie can get Jason to come along," Susan smirked, sipping on her straw and wagging her eyebrows.
"Not even in your wildest dreams," Annie huffed.
"Come on girls, work with me," Hunter dug his fingers into his dark green hair, "I don't have anybody vaguely interested to invite and I need to got to this club at least once before I die! So that's a no on Angelo, Violet?"
"Lay off, Hunter!" I hissed.
"Aw, damn, sorry- I thought-"
"Just invite him yourself, the guy's not that scary," Annie laughed.
"Easy for you to say, little miss suave," Hunter sighed, and dramatically held a fist to his chest, "But I'll do it... for Club Frisbee."
"You do that, what are we going to wear?" Susan grinned turning to a very excited Annie and I
If Hunter was actually willing to ask then I couldn't wait to know Angelo's response, something told me it would be positive.
"You may have to find one more person after him too, I have dinner with the Frances friday, like usual," I said and the table went quiet.
"Are you crazy? We've wanted this forever," Annie chuckled lightly, then her smile faded when I didn't reply, "you're serious."
"Ugh, boo!" Susan flopped onto the table and I cast her a playful glare.
"No need to be so dramatic," I huffed, tucking my hands under my thighs. "I'm really sorry, you know I can't refuse them. But I'm sure you'll find someone else to go with, it's Club Frisbee for crying out loud-"
"Exactly and you want to blow it off for a dumb dinner with some dumb idiot boy," Annie spat. "Can't refuse? Or can't get a backbone?"
I felt my smile falter for a moment. She was right, this story would go a lot differently if it was hers, but I managed a light laugh, "Maybe you should give me yours."
"This is not funny!"
"...and there goes Friday night," Susan sighed, turning so her chin rest on the table. "Sorry Hunter, maybe some other once in a lifetime opportunity."
