After some minutes of searching, Pierson saw Diana entering a building. When he came after her, Diana was struggling to open another door, which were locked. Pierson touched her hand to stop her stubbornly pulling the knob. ''Why did you run away?''

''I don't like being in the spotlight.''

Pierson then grabbed her arm to turn her around. ''Listen. Don't give a shit to what they say. They're just jealous. All I ask you now is to stay with me.''

''With you?''

''I know, it sounds crazy when it comes from someone like me but I want you to stay with me not as a soldier but as my girlfriend. Of course, if you want.'' His face quickly turned red.

''I-'' Just as she was about to tell him her feelings, a bomb exploded behind the window. Many pieces of glass flew across the room and one of them caused a large cut on Pierson's arm while he was protecting Diana. ''Pierson, your arm! It's bleeding!''

But he didn't pay attention to it, he was more concerned about her safety. ''Don't stay like that! Let's move!'' He ran over to the door opened in half and carefully peeked outside, but he quickly turned back. ''Shit! Krauts are coming here!'' He headed in the opposite way, hoping to find another exit, but there was no one. ''Listen. There's one way to get out of here. But...''

''But?''

''Only one of us can do it.'' Seeing Diana's confused look, he placed his hands on her shoulders and said: ''Go find Turner and tell him about krauts being here. I'll cover you from upstairs.''

''What? You want me to leave you here alone?''

''I want you to be safe-''

''I know, but I can't leave you like that. Not a chance.''

''Are you questioning my order?''

''No, sir. It just happened that I like a certain sergeant too much to leave his side.''

''Don't play smart with me.'' He then kissed her strongly. ''Now go!''

He didn't wait to see her leaving and ran upstairs. Diana hesitated to do as she was ordered to, she knew well that Pierson wasn't armed enough and soon he'd run out of ammo. Diana frowned when she heard a strange noise. When she looked through the broken window, she saw two tanks heading there. One of them stopped suddenly right in front of their hideout. They probably already saw Pierson. No waiting any longer, she ran back to Pierson to inform him about the new danger. He noticed it as well, but too late.

''Shit!'' - shouted Pierson, seeing that the tank was already aiming at them. Without thinking he took Diana in one arm because she was slower than him, and ran toward the exit, hoping he'd make it in time. The explosion was so close that the blast made them roll down from the stairs. The only thing Pierson could do then was to hold Diana protectively.

''Pierson?'' - asked Diana in a weak voice. Everything was spinning in her head, her vision went blurry. And then all went blank.

Some hours passed before Diana heard Pierson calling her. She slightly opened her eyes to see that she was still in his embrace. ''You alright?''

''Y-Yes... What happened?''

''We were knocked out. But it's fine now. They're gone.''

''You forgot about one thing... We got stuck here.'' The roof partially collapsed, and because of it the exit was cut off. Pierson hissed in pain as he tried to stand up. ''What's wrong?''

''It's nothing serious. Really.''

Seeing that Pierson tried to remove things blocking the way on his own, Diana said: ''Stop it. We can't get out anyway. Take a rest and let's wait for boys.''

After some time in silence Pierson finally spoke out. ''I almost forgot to give you a present. I wanted to do it earlier but I didn't have the chance...'' From his pocket he took out a brand new dog tags.

''How did you...''

''It's a secret. Now come here.'' Diana leaned closer so he could put it around her neck.

''Private Diana?''

''Sounds better than private Dave.''

''Thank you.'' Diana then left a peck on his cheek.

''How come you don't hate me? I hid the fact that I was your brother's commander. And you already heard enough about me.''

''How could I believe them? You were friends with Jason. There's no way you'd leave him behind whatever the circumstances would be.''

Pierson bit his lower lip. That was exactly what he did but would he simply tell her it was his fault she lost her brother? And she was his girlfriend he could easily lose. ''You wanted to know what happened to your brother...'' Diana slowly turned her head in his way. ''It was one tough battle, and he saved my ass.'' Pierson chuckled bitterly. ''He always treated me like an older brother. We were really close... You know what his last wish was?''

''What?''

''To take care of you.'' He took her hand into his and looked admirably at Diana. ''I wonder what would he say if he knew we're a couple now.''

''I think he'd be satisfied that my boyfriend is his best friend.''

''I hope so.'' Pierson then hugged her tightly, thinking it was the last time they were close. He planned to tell her the whole truth later.

''Diana?!'' It was Daniels's voice, he was nearby. It looked like he and others started searching for them.

''Guys! We're here!'' - shouted Diana.

''Diana!'' Zussman was already unblocking the exit to help them to get out.

When they got outside, they saw Turner awkwardly staring at them. ''You two alright?''

''Pierson is-''

''I'm fine.'' He stood up, ignoring the pain, and went ahead.

''Diana!'' Stiles ran over to her. ''I just wanted to say that I'm terribly sorry for that photo. When the war is over, I plan to write an article about the war, and I thought it'd be nice to add some words about soldiers' daily life.''

''It's alright. Just promise me you won't get rid of that photo.''

''Sure.''

Turner then approached Diana and said: ''It's time to part our ways. Someone named Karl Fisher will come for you in a minute. Sadly, we can't wait with you, we've to move on.''

''Then let me say goodbye to Pierson.''

''You can't.''

''What? Why?''

''Listen... It's hard for me to say that but I don't want you to distract Pierson. Remember, he's on duty now. You've already made enough mess and I beg you, don't make him any more problems. That's all I wanted to say, so... I'll be going now. Goodbye.'' He then left her standing speechless. One question couldn't leave her mind. Should she give up on Pierson?
