"Don't forget Remi!" I whispered desperately in her ears. Her eyes were going blank, like i was watching her mind forgetting right before my eyes. "Don't forget!" I was pushed out of the way by a frantic docter as her eyes drifted closed.
My chest physically ached. I knew she forgot again. But she'd remembered! The emotiontions, sadness, hope, happiness were all conflicting, fighting for space in my brain. It was hard to think. My hands were shaking. All i could see was her brown eyes, deep and bright, flickering with recognition, everytime i closed my eyes.
"How long was she awake?" The doctor asked in his cold, clinical tone. I stared at him as he took her vitals, two nurses taking notes by his side.
"Probably about 10 minutes." I replied, breathing out in a quick huff. My palms were sweating. I didn't even realize i was holding my breath. The nurses scribbled away on their pads. I peered around them at Remi. Her red hair was fanned out across her pillow, her pale papery face making it look impossibly redder. Even sleeping she was pretty, her delacate features looking sharp under the harsh flourescent lights.
"Did anything happeng? Anything that would have strained her heart or other vitals?" His voice was slightly softer now, as he stuck a small needle in the I.V. connected to her arm. He turned to face me as i worridly bit my lip.
As i processed his questions, i felt my face heat up. The kiss. I remembered the erratic beeping of the moniter as i pressed my lips to hers and hung my head in shame, a full out blush creeping up my neck.
The doctor sighed, shaking his head. "Damn teenagers. Can't keep their tongues in their own mouths for five minutes." He grunted, ushering the nurses out and closing the door behind them. He seemed to want to speak to me alone.
He motioned for me to sit down, and i did as he took the seat beside me. His face was serious, his cold grey eyes boring into mine.
"Now i'm not expecting much, if anything. But this is extremely important, do you understand?" I nodded, curious as to where he was heading with this.
"But theres a chance -a slim chance- that she could remember something. Especially about you. Strong emotional contact could be that special trigger we've been looking for!" My eyes widened. How did he-
"How did i know you?" He chuckled and my jaw dropped. Was this guy a mind reader? He smiled, a small experimental twinkle in his eyes.
"I've been on this case for 6 years! I've seen you here, waiting. Every time she's here, you're here. Even though she can't remember you were ever waiting. You're strong you know."
I blinked, astonished. My cheeks were warm. He'd noticed. Now that i looked at him he did seem familiar.
But i couldn't help worrying about her.
I loved her. Yes, i know that's an incredibly strong word, but it was the only one i could think of to describe how it feels.
"Lucas!" His voice made me jump. The doctor chuckled again, heaving himself into a standing position.
"Good luck, i gotta get back to work." He ran his fingers through his thinning white hair. He was older, i now noticed, with a slight beer gut folding over his belt.
"Lucas! I need to talk to you." The voice came again, angry. Remi's dad stepped into the door way.
My heart dropped. He was going to make me leave. I knew it. I stepped out of the room, following him to an empty hallway.
His eyes blazed with anger, smoldering. He had dark circles rimming his eyes, which were bloodshot and wide. His hair stuck up wildly, making him look like a madman.
