I was relieved when I was finally allowed to leave the masque. Exhausted, I sat on the edge of my bed, pulling roses from my hair. When I finally pulled the last one out, I flopped back onto the soft blankets. I had no idea how I was going to keep this whole charade up.
I only moved when there was a knock on the door. Opening it, I found a kitchen lad holding out a folded piece of parchment. Taking it, I watched the little urchin scurry away before closing the door once again.
Leaning against the solid wooden door, I opened the letter and began to read,
If you want to avoid becoming another rose for the King to pluck, come to the southeast gate tomorrow at midnight.

The handwriting was an elegant, spidery scrawl. I read and re-read it several times. I had two choices. Marry the king and consider my days numbered or take a chance to free myself even though I knew the risks.
Looking up from the letter to the red-tinted moon just outside the window. If there was any chance that I could escape this never-ending hell, then I had to take it.
