Gossip

The charge was witchcraft.

The court was subdued, after all, this was not the first time this charge had been thrust upon one of King Henry's wives. When this happened, some advisors with adversaries to dispose of would paint their political enemies with the same brush as the unfortunate wife. It was safer to keep your mouth shut and your head down.

I kept clear of the gossip to the best of my abilities. Of course, as the next woman slated to become wife 144, courtiers were seeking my favor no matter how far I tried to remove myself from court affairs. Nearly all of Queen Elizabeth's ladies in waiting now followed me around as though I was the next queen already.

"Did you hear about the new gentleman come to court?" Lady Valerie said in that annoying way courtiers with a new piece of gossip talked.

I didn't glance up from my book, but kept an ear open. I may not want to be in the middle of the drama, but I still was a courtier myself.

"I heard he is an overlord." Lady Mary replied, her own tone equally as scandalous. This sent the other ladies tittering like a flock of brightly colored birds. I had to admit, it was exciting, but I continued to keep my head down.

"Who is it?"

"Is it someone we know?"

The questions came flying from all directions, but Lady Valerie silenced them with a single reply, "My husband told me it is the Radio Demon, Alastor."
