It had been a whole summer since she'd gotten the cure shoved down her throat. She'd been keeping a low profile since then, afraid of Damon's anger, because she had tried to kill her doppelganger in rage, considering Elena was partly responsible for Elijah leaving. She didn't quite know how to be human though, and she was so afraid. She was more afraid now than she had been of Klaus. She was so afraid that an enemy would be around the next corner. And she was alone. No protection from Elijah. She was sure she wouldn't have Damon's either. He loved her doppelganger, after all. And he hated her for a lot of things she'd done as a vampiress.

Suddenly, as she continued limping down a road from wearing heels all summer, she was thrown from behind, making her land on the shoulder of the road, as she heard a very familiar voice say, "Long time no see, Katherine. " It was a vampire she'd turned and taught how to be a vampire. Ambrose. A torture happy vampire. And as she got up at her human pace, he was instantly in front of her, a hand around her throat.

"Please. Just kill me now," she pleaded, despite not wanting to die.

"Not right away. I searched for you for centuries. You're going to suffer as long as I can, what with your now human weaknesses," he replied. Then the pain came, before he tossed her again.

Meanwhile, Damon was nearby, having fed not long ago. He was about to go on his route home, when a familiar mixed scent came to him. Katherine, blood, and human. Then he heard her in pain. Hearing her pain and sensing everything else, he knew she was in trouble from some kind of enemy. And so, he headed for the direction of the commotion.

Fifteen minutes later, he arrived at the scene. He saw a vampire that was enjoying himself in hurting her, as well as an injured Katherine. Despite his hate, he'd never let an enemy hurt or kill her if he could help it. So, he grabbed him from behind, telling him, "Despite everything she's done, Katherine doesn't deserve this." Then he ripped out his heart, letting his body fall to the ground.

A few moments later, he was at her side, using his jacket to apply pressure to her open neck artery, trying to at least slow the bleeding.

"Stay with me, Kitty Kat."

Not long after, he watched them at the Mystic Falls hospital, as they rushed her down the hall for surgery. He hoped that she'd be okay. She'd been very injured. He was pretty sure, if it hadn't been for him being nearby and helping her, she probably would've been dead. That was something he didn't want to picture. He knew if she survived though, since no one else was in town to do so, he'd have to be her protection. And he was willing to do that. After all, he wanted her to live.

Several hours later, she'd survived the surgery, but was most likely staying for a while. Although she'd survived the surgery and was stable, she wasn't as well as he'd been expecting her to be. There'd been a lot of damage, but he hadn't expected to see her the way she was. He could've asked Meredith to cheat, or he could've fed her his blood to try and heal her, but he didn't know if there'd be any side effects. She was human from the cure, after all. No one had ever been turned human with the cure before. And so, he didn't do what he wanted to do.

He sat on her bedside, looking at her. He then rested a hand on the side of her face. She was hooked up to a respiratory machine to make sure she stayed alive, so he knew he had to be careful.

"Katherine?" he called to her, since he was pretty sure he remembered that she could hear him. "It's me, Kitty Kat. You're gonna be okay. You just need to heal and wake up for me. Don't worry. The vampire that did this is dead. I killed him. I'm sorry you're going through all of this. When you wake up, you won't have to worry. I'll protect you. I'll keep you alive," he informed and promised her. "No matter what, I'm not leaving."

After a few weeks or so later, he decided to finally try to save her by giving her some of his blood. Thankfully, it worked, which saved her.
