Phoenix POV
Tommy and I sit on either side of his bed. We slept next to him all night, watching him code twice, listening to the ventilators breathe for him and watch the heart rhythm monitor. Tommy's face is devoid of any emotion. It's eerie to see a chipper person completely still, unmoving.
I know I look a mess. My eyes are red and puffy and the nurses keep trying to get me to eat. I want none of it.
...
It's been 5 fucking days and nothing. The smoke trashed his lungs and now he lays there hooked up to about 10 different monitors. Tommy stands in the hallway while the doctor debriefs him on Nikolai's condition.
"Not much you can do?" Tommy growls out, his eyes take on a murderous glint and his hands clench by his side.
"Excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't it your fucking job to do something?" His voice raises a few octaves as he starts toward the doctor. I sigh and stand up, getting in between them.
"This isn't helping anyone, Tommy. Let's go back in the room and calm down, yeah?" I ask him. It seems like he has to physically rip his eyes away from the doctor but he eventually does and stalks back to the chair beside Nikolai. I apologize to the doctor and walk back in, taking my seat.
"He said he'll wake up when he wakes up. If. If he wakes up."
His jaw is tight and I feel tears prick my eyes as I fight to hold them back. I take Nikolai's hand and hold it in mine. I bring it up to my lips and kiss his scarred knuckles.
"You promised." I whisper. The sadness racks through my body as I stifle a sob. I look over to Tommy and tears stream down his face as well.
Fuck this.
I can't just sit here and do nothing. Tommy meets my eyes and we both come to a silent agreement. We silently get up and say our goodbyes to Nikolai before walking out of the room.
We walk in stride with one another as we exit the hospital. Both of us with only one thing on our mind.
I promise, Nikolai. He will pay.
...
Tommy takes me to his fathers since just about everything went up in flames including my knives from uncle Calen. I'm pissed.
Me: The knives you got me got burned up in a fire.
Me: Oh yeah, some punk set fire to the penthouse. I'm okay. Nikolai's not.
Funcle Calen: on the next flight out. Do not, I repeat, do not make one single move without me there. Do I bring your parents?
I love him. I want nothing more than to have my parents with me, to hear my dad say that everything's going to be okay. To hug my mom. But that's way too much power in one are, we'd be a walking, breathing target.
Me: No. Too much power in one place. Just you please.
Funcle Calen: good thinking. Be there in a day.
Funcle Calen: I'll get you new knives.
I click my phone off. We pull up to the Petrov manner and it's massive. Three stories at the very least made completely out of brick. It looms intimidatingly over us. It's beautiful but cold and for some reason I can't imagine growing up here.
I follow Tommy inside.
"Stay with me."
He says lowly. I do. I have to practically jog to keep up with him as he charges into the main room where I see Mr. Petrov.
"Don't worry dad! Your eldest son is just fine, thanks so much for asking." He yells at him. Mr. Petrov just calmly turns around.
"He was an idiot for taunting a reckless man."
My blood boils. I glare at his dad and open my mouth to say something when I see Tommy completely snap. He rushes towards his dad and throws him to the ground. Clambering on top of him, he raises his fist and throws punch after punch to his face.
"He's your son!"
Punch.
"How could you?"
Punch.
"You beat him as a kid."
Punch.
"You beat me as a kid."
Punch.
"The least you could do is fucking visit him!" He roars.
He slams his fist into his father a few more times and I fucking let him. He deserves it. When he's done, he stands up and heads out.
"Fucking pathetic." I hiss as I watch him roll over. I quickly follow Tommy up to his room. He slams the door and paces back and forth, trying to calm down. After a while I step in. I grab his shoulders and look him in the eye.
"Make this anger productive. Plan. Let's make a plan."
He nods and sits on the bed.
We plan.
UPDATES WILL BE A LITTLE SLOWER. I AM MOVING BACK TO MY HOME STATE!
