One day became two. Two days became three. And three days became four. After the day Reggie had discovered that the impossible was actually real, days proceeded to pass. But he couldn't go a day without thinking about Luka.
Reggie would think about him all day and night, convincing himself that it was all real, even though the other side of his brain told him it wasn't. He walks down the same stretch of shore every day, unsure if he'll ever return. He just wondered if they'd run into each other again.
"I'll catch you later, Reggie."
Did Luka mean to say that? Is it possible that it was just an accident, and he'll never see him again? Reggie had no idea, but he didn't think he'd be able to look him in the eyes again. He didn't believe his galaxy-like eyes would ever be anything he could see again.
He didn't know why Luka was always on his mind, but he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. It's as if Luka had infiltrated his psyche, and he now refuses to leave. Reggie, on the other hand, needed him to leave as he wouldn't see him again.
Reggie continued his trek over the sand, sighing, after rearranging his grocery bag, which was becoming difficult to hold. Even though it was only one bag, it felt heavier than usual. He was strolling by the same spot where he had discovered Luka injured, but it was only him there, just like every other day.
"Ah, about time you showed up."
At least, that's what he assumed.
Reggie's head virtually turned to view someone resting on a single large rock. They were not, however, staring in Reggie's direction. They were looking out at the peacefully moving waves of the ocean. It's as if they could sense Reggies presence. And that's when he noticed something familiar.
He took a few steps towards the individual, slightly squinting his eyes. And then, "Luka?"
It was his tail that he had recognised. His blue tail was a memory he'd never be willing to overlook. It appeared to be in his mind almost constantly, just like the rest of himself. Luka was someone he could never get himself to not think about.
"Aw, you remembered my name?" Luka chuckled. "How sweet." He craned his neck to look at the boy approaching him.
"How could I? It would be a real pity if you forgot mine though." Reggie remarked this as he came to a halt only a few inches away from Luka, who was lying on his back now, looking up at Reggie from a strange angle.
Luka's lips curved into a playful smirk, as he said, "Hm.. if I just put my finger on it." He hummed, his webbed finger tapping on his chin as though he was lost in contemplation.
Shaking his head, Reggie put his bag to the side, sitting down next to the snarky mermaid. "Are you trying to be sarcastic?" Luka sat up when he noticed Reggie had taken a seat next to him.
"Yes I am, Reggie." He smiled.
"Thought so," he chuckled. "So, what are you doing here? Come to get some fresh air?" He decided to be the first to start the conversation after a little gap. During their brief silence, the only sound was the waves, which communicated silently.
Luka shrugged. "I guess that's part of it." His attention shifted away from the setting sun and towards Reggie, who had asked the enquiry. "I wanted to understand more about you, so I came back."
"You want to understand more about me?" Reggie questioned. "But why?"
"Well for starters you saved my life," he shrugged again before pushing himself into the water, producing a little splash. Luka disappeared for a a brief moment before reappearing a second later. Reggie looked at the mermaid silently, his head cocked in a mute enquiry. "I don't know...you're a fascinating human being about whom I'd like to understand more. You seem different, you know?" He looked up at him, smiling gently.
