Another long day complete, another boring one to be exact. Reggie had largely nice customers, however he did have to deal with a few assholes who he despised with all his heart. He was just relieved that his day was finished and he could see Luka.He was currently walking on the best part of the beach, which made him shiver due to the cold night. He wasn't wearing anything other than his work uniform, which never kept him as warm as he wished.
"I'll keep you warm." Luka would always say.
He reddened just thinking about him, which was becoming an uncontrollable thing now.
Reggie arrived a few minutes later, entering inside the well-lit cave, seeing Luka sitting on the dry surface. He found it a little strange when he noticed how he had where his knees should've been if he were a human up against his chest, he had his arms wrapped around his tail, like he was hugging it.
"Hey, I'm back," Reggie smiles. "sorry for leaving so quickly this morning, didn't exactly want my ass kicked by my boss for being late."
"It's okay." Luka replies, but something in his tone grabs Reggie's attention right away. When he looked at him again, he noticed that the bottom half of his face was concealed by his tail, and the upper part of his face seemed so dull; like he had something on his mind
Reggies brows crinkled in confusion, then, he sat down next to him. "Hey, something wrong?"
"Hm? What, no." He was clearly lying.
Reggie hummed, pulling something out of his bag before showing Luka. "I got some seaweed," he says. "like the actual good one from the store and not straight from the ocean. Want some?"
"Nah, I'm good," Luka declined. "you can have it."
"Luka, you always get excited when I bring something back for you," Reggie says, he clearly knew something was up. "What's going on?
Luka looks at Reggie, finding himself holding his breath as he finally saw his face. He didn't look for long, as he felt himself heat up so quickly.
"You're going to think it's crazy-"
"You'll never know unless you tell me."
Luka's face sunk into his tail a bit more. He didn't say anything.
"Luka, you can talk to me."
He gave it a moment, not even a minute, but more like ten thousand years. But he ended up speaking, and his next words caught Reggie off guard to the point where he didn't want it to be true.
"I think...I think I might be in love, Reg."
Reggie stared, not a word coming from him. As he felt his heart stop in it's tracks, all he could do was stare in stillness. "...what?"
"Yeah, I know it's pretty stupid," Luka chuckles awkwardly. "I thought it was impossible, but, I guess I was wrong..."
Luka went on and on about how foolish and impossible he felt it was, but he was deaf to Reggie's silence seeing as he was in his own world. He didn't know that Reggie was practically crying inside. He didn't know that the little voice in his head was lying to him, telling him it wasn't true.
"Yeah, I can't believe I...Reg?" He says, finally noticing Reggies stillness. "You okay?"
Reggie blinked, not hearing a single word Luka had rambled, but all he said was, "Oh yeah, never been better." He got up and walked over to their small seashell collection. He merely stood up so Luka wouldn't see his pained expression.
He grabbed a shell. A pink one. Luka's favourite. "I'm happy for you," he lies. "that reminds me, gotta tell you what happened today. I met someone."
Luka turns, staring at the back of Reggies head in confusion. "You...met someone?"
"Yeah, I've known them for a while actually," he lies again. "I think I'm in love, you know." He didn't even pause to consider what he was saying; instead, he continued on, and Luka would never know that he was talking with a hurtful expression on his face.
This time it was Luka's turn to feel his heart stop. No, actually. He felt his heart break. "You're...in love?"
"Problem?" Reggie asks, sounding so careless it hurt.
The mermaid swallowed, trying to hide the break in his voice. "No...just happy for you-"
"Yeah well, you don't sound to happy if you ask me." He says, his voice lowering. He hated himself for his behaviour, yet he was spewing forth words like vomit.
"What- Reggie, I am-"
"Yeah well, I'm happy for you too," he clenched the shell in annoyance. Annoyance for himself. "hope you know what you're doing though, mermaids can't fall in love after all."
Luka's breath hitched, brows knitted together. His head hurt from all the feelings he was experiencing. Confusion. Sadness. Anger. Hurt. "Why are you being like this?"
"Being like what? Being honest?" Reggie turned around, now facing Luka. "You'd rather I just lie right in front of your face? You'd rather me tell you what's not true? But if you want the truth so bad, then here it is, you can't fall in love, because you're not a human! You're a mermaid, Luka, who can never fall in love!"
The mermaid locked his gaze on him, the hurt visible in his eyes. He was confused. He didn't know where all this was coming from, but he must've did something wrong. He wanted to fix it, but it looked like Reggie was to upset to even try. Luka's brows twitched incessantly before it stopped. His brows furrowed together in angered anguish, and he felt his eyes beginning to sting.
"What the fuck was I even thinking?" he said, peering directly into Reggie's inscrutable eyes. "I should've just let myself die instead of allowing a human to help me on the day we met, because you know what, Reginald? You fucking humans are all the same."
Reggie's pupils dilated. His fists were clinched, and just as he was about to say something, Luka beat him to it. "Don't. Don't say a word."
He turned around, re-entering the water. "They were all right about you's," he says, sounding so emotionless. "humans, like you, are all extremely dense."
And he was gone.
Reggie took a step forwards just as he left, reaching a hand out, but he was to late to even call for him to come back. He was gone, and it was all Reggies fault.
The shell in his hand began to slip from his grasp with the way his fists slowly opened. And then, the shell fell to the ground, and Reggie couldn't care less to even look at what had created a slight noise to reverberate around the cave.
He didn't know what he was thinking when saying such those things, but he was absolutely certain he had ruined everything.
