I was trying to take a nap in the backseat of Daddy's car, we were on our way to Twin Peaks for a case he's doing, from what I heard while he was on the phone with Mr. Cole, it was a murder case. Daddy says I'll be going to school in town and we'll be staying at a hotel. Daddy's an FBI agent, he makes a lot of money, we could stay at the hotel for weeks! I was even booked a room of my own right across from Daddy's, the rooms were single beds anyway. I'm almost ten and Daddy spoils me rotten sometimes, I'm not so spoiled that I ask for a whole store.
"Diane, 11:30 am, February 24th, I'm entering the town of Twin Peaks..."
Daddy talked into his tape recorder without disturbing me. Mrs. Evans is his co-worker like Mr. Cole, agents record what they find so I understand why he talks into it.
After a while, I felt the car being parked.
"Cori, let's get something to eat."
I sat up and looked at the sign behind us.
"RR Diner," I said.
He chuckled.
"It's called the Double R Diner, I heard they have the best cherry pies."
We got out of the car.
"We'll get us lunch and we'll check into our hotel."
We walked in and sat at one of the booths. A very pretty waitress with long brown hair walked to us and gave us a menu.
"Hello, I'm Shelly and I'll be your server. I never seen you here in town before, it is a small town where everybody knows each other."
"We just now got here, we'll be here a while," Daddy said.
"Well, welcome to Twin Peaks. I'm Shelly Johnson."
"Dale Cooper, this is my daughter Corinne."
"Hi," I said.
"Nice to meet you both. Let's get started with some drinks."
"A cup of coffee please."
"What about you Corinne?"
"Orange juice, pretty please."
Mrs. Johnson smiled and walked away.
"Isn't this exciting, new town, new people, a new school?" Daddy asked.
"Yeah, I love travelling!"
"Really, I thought you tagging along with me for work would be boring?"
"Nope, it's awesome!"
He smiled. Mrs. Johnson walked back to us with drinks.
"Coffee and orange juice."
"Thank you," we said.
Daddy sipped it right then.
"Shelly, this is, excuse me...sweetie cover your ears."
I did so, he finished his sentence with "a damn fine cup of coffee," he always says that, he likes his coffee plain black. He doesn't want me to hear him swear, although just covering my ears, I can hear him but muffled. I uncovered my ears.
"I'll have a ham and cheese sandwich," Daddy said.
"I want one too...pretty please," I said.
"Two ham and cheese sandwiches, ok, it'll be here shortly," Mrs. Johnson said.
She walked away again.
"You really don't mind this?" Daddy asked.
"No I don't, like I said, I love to travel, see new things, meet new people, I could write a book about it."
"A book about us huh?"
"Yeah, I could call it 'Corinne Cooper: Daughter of the FBI,' it'll be a New York Times best seller or something."
He smiled.
"How long do you think we'll be here Daddy?" I asked.
"I'm not sure, as long as it takes to solve the case I was assigned, days, weeks."
"It takes that long to solve a murder case?"
"Maybe...Cori, how did you know it was murder?"
"I heard you talking to Mr. Cole on the phone the other day."
He rested his chin on his fist.
"Corinne Cooper, you were eavesdropping."
"I'm sorry, working for the FBI always seems like a fun job, like James Bond."
"Being an FBI agent takes almost six months of intense training, but once you get to become an agent, it can be fun, other times it isn't, it's stressful. I'm not intending to discourage you from writing a book about our adventures or becoming an agent yourself when you grow up, I'm being honest about my job. Do you understand?"
"Yes Daddy. "
"Good. It's kinda early to think about what you wanna do when you grow up, I want you to be a kid, go to school, have fun, I'm not gonna put that kind of pressure on you."
"I know."
"Ok sweetie."
Soon, we ate our food, the best sandwich ever to be honest.
"Any dessert before you go?" Mrs. Johnson asked.
Me and Daddy turned to each other and smiled.
"Shall we Daddy?" I asked.
"We shall baby. Two slices of cherry pie."
"You got it!"
We took our first bite of the pie that Twin Peaks is famous for.
"Like heaven!" I said.
"No wonder it's so famous."
We paid and left the diner.
