The hotel's dining area looked like Cracker Barrel, well, Twin Peaks is famous for all the fishing and hunting....lodging, you know. Me and Daddy sat at a table for two, of course he ordered a cup of coffee, I ordered milk.
"Daddy, why do you like coffee so much?"
"Because it's caffiene fueled heaven, that's why."
"Can I try a sip?"
"I don't think that's a good idea honey, you see, caffeinated drinks keeps you awake, coffee is a grown up drink, you can wait til you're older to start drinking it."
"It's like alcohol, easy to get addicted to, difficult to quit, or drugs or cigarettes."
He was about to take a sip but stopped.
"Where did you learn that?"
"Back in second grade, we had this guest speaker talk to us about being drug free and peer pressure."
"Oh ok."
"Do you drink alcohol?"
"I'd have a glass of wine or a bottle of beer on occasions but I'm not really a big drinker. Do you know the legal age to drink Cori?"
"21."
"Yep and the legal age to purchase is 18. I don't mean to go all FBI agent on you when lecturing about these things."
"It's ok Daddy, do you whatever you have to do to educate me. What about smoking?"
"I don't smoke, you know that Cori, never have, never will."
"Me too Daddy!"
He smiled.
"Good girl."
A few seconds later, a lady walked to us, she had short brown hair, she was pretty.
"Hi, you must be Agent Cooper, I'm Audrey Horne, the hotel owner's daughter."
"Nice to meet you Miss. Horne," he said politely shaking her hand.
I noticed her cheeks were a little pink.
"My daughter Corinne."
I shook her hand.
"Nice to meet you, aren't you adorable."
We chuckled. A waitress walked to us.
"Ready to order?"
"Oh, I'm sorry."
Audrey took a step back to let us order.
"Ribeye steak please," Daddy said.
The waitress turned to me.
"Chicken fried steak please."
"Good choice," Audrey said.
The waitress took our menus and left.
"I guess we're both having steak tonight huh?" Daddy asked me.
"Did you know that chicken fried steak is a delicacy in the South?" Audrey asked.
"Yeah, I never tried it before, it sounds really good."
"I've had it many times, it's my favorite, it's the best."
We kept carrying on a conversation until Mr. Horne told her to come with him. We ate our dinner and headed to our rooms.
"Got any homework to do?" Daddy asked.
"A little math worksheet."
"Go get it, bring it in my room, and do it."
I brought my whole backpack in Daddy's room.
"What is it?"
"It's my backpack," I joked smiling.
"You silly little girl, let me rephrase that: what is the homework about?"
"Something I've been dreading since I first heard about it."
I unzipped my backpack and got my math stuff out.
"Let me see it."
I got the worksheet out and handed it to him.
"Ah fractions, yes...those can be tricky little boogers but if you practice, which I always say, makes perfect, you can tackle em like a Redskin quarterback."
"Daddy, you know I'm not a football fan."
"I know sweetie, it's just a simile."
"What's a simile?"
"Comparisons using like or as, I thought you already learned that in school Cori."
"Yeeeaaaahh, but I confuse it with metaphor."
"Well...they are somewhat the same, they both have to do with comparing something, a simile uses like or as, a metaphor is comparing something to another thing that doesn't apply. For example, the phrase heart of gold or a walking dictionary. Have you heard of those?"
I nodded.
"Those are metaphors."
"Oh...I get it now Daddy."
"Good, now get started on that homework, if you need help, say the word."
"Ok."
"Help me, help me," he said in a high pitched voice.
I giggled.
"Alright, get serious, get to work."
"Aye aye captain."
The first set of problems were shapes that were split and shaded, I needed to write how much is shaded in fraction form.
"Rectangle cut into six rectangles, packed like sardines, that's a simile, three of them are shaded, three over six, which is also one half."
I wrote one half down on my paper. I looked at Daddy who was across from me on the bed looking at me.
"You learn things quick baby. Do you do that in school?"
"Do what?"
"Talking to yourself, thinking out loud like you just did."
"I think out loud in my head, it's quieter."
"That's just thinking Cori," he grinned.
"I know."
"Looks like you know what you're doing. I'm gonna get my pajamas and jump in the shower. When you get done, let me check it."
"Ok."
He went to the bathroom and turned the shower on.
