Nezuko stumbled back home, she needed to see Tanjiro and Keizo. She needed to tell them she passed; she was okay.
She limped her way down the road, the dojo just a little bit aways. She could feel her legs giving out, she stumbled one last time before collapsing. Her crow swerved in the sky above her, cawing at anything that moved. He was a little anxious, she could tell that much.
Nezuko sighed, she was tired. Staying up for so long fighting demons and climbing a mountain all at the same time really took it out of her.
Nezuko pushed the door of the dojo open, Master Keizo stood over the fire and pot scooping stew into a bowl. Tanjiro sat at the table, fiddling with a napkin.
"Tanjiro!" Nezuko yelped, rushing over to her brother. He was awake. She tumbled before she got to him, but he rushed forward and caught her before she hit the ground.
Nezuko clambered up and hugged her older brother, which he happily returned. Tanjiro nodded excitedly, the sun shone through the leaves, he yelped and jumped back a moment his cheek sizzling.
"Get back inside!" Nezuko advised. Tanjiro quickly grabbed Nezukos hand helping her inside, getting a few burns along the way, nothing he couldn't heal in a few moments.
Keizo sat still for a moment before inching forward, but Nezuko rushed to him first hugging him with all her might."I couldn't have gotten this far without you."
Keizo softly returned the fourteen-year old's hug.
"My pleasure."
-----
"Nezuko!"
Nezuko turned her head from the mirror, she was mid braid. But Keizo's voice called her from outside and she knew what that meant.
The swordsmith was here. She got her sword today.
"Coming!" She stumbled up, letting her long black hair fall out of the braid.
Passing Tanjiro who gave her a smile and a thumbs up from the other room.
Coming out into the light she was met with a hyottoko mask, her face inches from the bubbled cheeks.
"Oh-!" Nezuko bowed. "I'm sorry I didn't-"
The swordsmith was tiny. He couldn't have been older than Nezuko.
"No, no!" he flailed his arms in front of him. "It's my fault, I'm just here to deliver your sword!"
"Did you make it?"
"Yes," he bowed again looking slightly embarrassed. "My name is Kotetsu, you're the first slayer I've made a sword for."
"Well, it's an honor then!" Nezuko cheered.
"Can I see it?"
"Of course!" Kotetsu looked to Keizo for more instruction, who nodded and stood up leading them both inside. Nezuko saw Tanjiro peeking out from his room making sure to keep a blanket over himself, he nodded, and she nodded back.
"Now, you know how this works?" Keizo asked Nezuko, she turned back and shook her head sitting down beside him, Kotetsu took the floor just opposite her.
"Once you hold the sword it'll change colors, that color will represent how your life as a demon slayer will go, supposedly."
"Oooo," Nezuko hummed.
She stared at the box for a moment, slowly bringing out her hand, she opened it, shiny iron metal staring back. It was so shiny she could almost see her reflection in it, hesitantly she grabbed the handle and held it up.
Slowly the hilt spiraled in black, steeping up and turning the blade ebony.
Nezuko deflated slightly at the sight.
"I was hoping for pink," she mumbled.
"Hmm," Keizo hummed over her complaints. "That's not a good sign.'
Nezuko turned her head. "Wait- why?"
"The black blade has a muddy track record." Kotetsu explained. "Historically, every black bladed demon slayer wielder lived a very short life."
Nezuko's shoulders slumped. "Oh."
"That is not to worry about though," Keizo put a hand on his pupil's shoulder. "You can always prove fate wrong."
Nezuko smiled and nodded. Sure, a black blade meant trouble immediately but, she wasn't about to give up her quest and her big brother just because a mood sword told her she was gonna die early.
Nope, she'd prove it wrong.
"Thank you kotetsu!" Nezuko bowed her head with a smile so big it barely fit on her face. "This is wonderful!
"My pleasure really," Kotetsu bowed again. "If you have any problems be sure to call! I'll come running!"
"I'll try my best not to make it too much trouble, I promise," Nezuko chuckled.
Keizo talked with Kotetsu for a few more minutes before he escorted the small swordsmith out. Nezuko booked it to Tanjiro's room to show him.
"Big brother look," She slid into his room sword in hand. "Your little sister is moving up in the world!"
Tanjiro sat in the corner, a blanket over his head and a worried expression rested in his red eyes.
"What's wrong-?" Nezuko dropped her shoulders.
Tanjiro nodded over to the sword, she held it up trying to figure out what he was trying to say. Suddenly it dawned on her.
"I'll be fine," she tried to reassure him, walking over and sitting down next to him. "Just because history says I'll die sooner than later doesn't mean anything, I'll prove the universe wrong."Tanjiro took a moment to consider this, his eyebrows furrowed in disapproval.
"Besides you don't want to be a demon forever, right? This is the way I find out more about how to help you."
Tanjiro let the blanket fall from his head, the doors were shut anyway, no way for him to get burned. Nezuko rested her head on his shoulder and his on her head.
It wasn't unusual for the two to just sit in silence. They found comfort in each other and they both needed lots of that right now. However confident Nezuko was she couldn't say there wasn't a certain level or risk with this as a whole.
She quickly zoned out getting lost in her own thoughts, that was normal too. Nezuko was spacey, anyone who knew her could tell that much. Tanjiro lightly shook her to get her attention after Keizo's call for lunch fell on deaf ears.
"Oh, sorry! I'll be right there!" She called back, the walls were thin, she didn't need to talk very loud. Tanjiro helped his little sister off the ground before running after the smell, he didn't need to eat of course, but he liked being in the room anyway.
Nezuko chuckled and followed quickly after her brother, the black blade laying on the demons empty futon.
