The sun's setting now, but it's still warm out. Though, judging by the boys expressions, the pool water isn't. Shame. I kind of wanted to go for a swim.
I plonk myself on a sun lounger beside Gabby, Lucy & Lydia instead. When they notice me, they dissolve into giggles for a few seconds before starting to chat about something random. I quickly realise everyone's getting just a little bit tipsy and I suddenly feel awkward and out of place. I get up and get myself an orange juice and start to sip it by myself on the patio. I'm suddenly aware of how many people are here. The place is crowded with people I love, people I've met and people I've never seen before. Everyone's laughing and chatting, louder and louder. I need to sit out for a minute but I can't see Louise anywhere and Alfie's messing with some other boys in the water. They seem even more drunk than the girls and I don't really want to ask for some time alone with him. I know what his friends will shout then.
Then I remember someone. Jim. Jim won't be drunk. The thought makes me feel calmer already. The first time the pair of us met, I was mid panic attack. Jim knows what to do.It doesn't take me long to find him. He's sitting poolside with a cupcake, dangling his legs. His hair is sopping wet - he's obviously been for a dip. I slip off my beaded sandals and sit next to him, resting my head on his shoulder.
"Hey Zoe!" He says cheerfully. "Our friends really like to party, don't they. Fancy a swim?"
He swallows the rest of his cake, pulls off his t-shirt and slides into the water.
"I don't really know" I reply tentatively.
"Come on!" He encourages, "Don't let you and Tan have gone swimwear shopping for nothing."
It dawns on my that he's right so I strip down to my new black bikini and jump into the pool. It's a cold shock, but Jim leads me out into the centre where everyone else is and I start having fun again. My worries are left on the side with my sundress.
I must have been in the pool about half an hour when I hear Louise shouting my name. I whirl around. She stands on the deck looking worried. I know instantly something is wrong.
I clamber out of the water, grab my kimono cardigan and pull it on as I sprint towards her. People are staring, realising something has happened.
"What's the matter?" I ask breathlessly.
"Chummy!" She says shakily, "I can't find Darcy."
