With Jessie following me out of the dorms I finally noticed how tall he actually was. I was naturally five foot six, but I almost never went anywhere without a tall pair of wedges or heels on my feet because it was just something I was used to. Even with the black pair of tall shoes that I had chosen to wear, Jessie was still at least a good 4 inches taller than me.
"How tall are you?" I asked him randomly.
"Six foot five, why?"
"I don't know, I was just curious." I answered him with an uninterested tone to my voice. I don't think I've ever actually met someone as tall as him and it hurt my neck to look up to him even with my heels on. We slowly fell into step next to one another and as we walked along the weaving sidewalk on the campus, the smell of freshly cut grass in the air. I couldn't help myself as I noted the definition in his arms visible under his long sleeved shirt. I silently wondered what he looked like shirtless, and if he was the type of guy who lived and breathed fitness.
"So what brought you to this college particularly, didn't you say you took online classes your first year?" I asked, trying to make some conversation to break the awkward silence.
"I spent my freshman year taking online courses so I could help take care of my mom. My dad died last year and she wasn't the same, so instead of leaving to go to college I elected to stay home and look after her.." He answered me in a way like this was a conversation he didn't really want to have, I was actually surprised by his honesty. He didn't come off like the type of guy who would take care of his mother.
"What about you, are you originally from North Carolina?" He asked as he shifted the conversation off himself.
"No I'm actually from New York but not the city, I grew up in upstate. You've probably never heard of the town. I lived there my entire life until I decided I wanted to come here." I said it with the same conviction realizing that this was also a conversation I didn't really want to have either.
"So what brought a girl like you to a place like this?" He asked with curiosity.
"When my sister left I couldn't stand to be in the same town anymore, there was nothing left nailing me down to that crappy place. So one day I woke up and decided I wanted to be as far away from there as I could. I applied for colleges all around the United States and took the first one that offered me a spot." I said with a shrug.
He looked at me with curious eyes and we made our way down the sidewalk to the library."That explains a lot, you're not really like the other girls I've met."
"Well what's that supposed to mean?" I asked half curious but mostly annoyed.
"Nothing, just that you're not like the other girls here."
Before I could ask him to elaborate his rude statement I realized that we had made it to the library. I also realized that I had forgotten the books I'd meant to return and swore under my breath."Shit, I forgot the books I had to return. Looks like I'm going to have to come back here again tomorrow,"
"Goddamnit, there's probably going to be a bunch of late fees." I said while rubbing my hand against my forehead frustrated.
He looked down at me with his hazel eyes as he opened the door and said,"You know a girl like you shouldn't swear so much, it's not attractive."
"Bite me."
I followed him around as he found the few books he'd need for the start of term which was already two weeks away, wow did time fly. He pulled a book down from a high shelf effortlessly that was titled Computer Graphics For Manufacturing and it sparked my curiosity.
