Context: Dust!Sans defeats Frisk in the judgement hall but is unable to take their SOUL. Frisk never resets, leaving Sans alone in the underground.

With his high LV, however, Sans is able to cross the barrier and return to the surface. He's free... but at what cost?

Warnings: Dust!Sans is hella depressed

Reader's gender is left ambiguous (in this part at least)

this is pretty platonic honestly, if i make more parts it might get romantic idk

It was a rainy day. As the blinding light faded from view, Sans was left on on the ledge with a tranquil view of the valley around him. He couldn't see far; most of it was obscured by fog as the rain poured down around him. He shivered, feeling it soak into his hoodie and wash away the dust on his bones.

He'd been here before, hadn't he? At this same place, looking out into the distance. They had all been there. Alphys, Toriel, Asgore, Undyne, Papyrus...

Sans choked up and his vision began to blur. He couldn't feel the difference between the rain dripping down his skull and the tears running from his eyesockets.

Was this worth it? Becoming a monster to stop the monster? The cycle was broken, but everyone he knew and loved- everyone he'd fought so hard to save- was gone.

Should he just...?

...No. He'd sacrificed so much. If he died, then they won. Sans clenched his fist. He would stay alive just to spite them, the little-

Suddenly his vision began to give out. He felt his soul drop to the bottom of his ribcage, remembering how he'd pushed himself beyond his limits during his fight with Frisk. He wobbled, no longer able to keep himself standing, and passed out.

"...Are you awake?" a voice asked. Sleepily, Sans tried to say "five more minutes", but forgot to summon his tongue and ended up sounding like a tap dancer.

Suddenly he bolted upright, remembering his circumstances.

"Woah, hey! Calm down! You're really sick, you shouldn't move too much-" the human sitting in the chair next to his bed exclaimed worriedly.

Sans snapped his finger, but conjured a splitting headache instead of a blaster. Looks like he'd have to do this the hard way.

He grabbed a lamp off of the table and snapped it in half, leaving the broken end dangerously sharp. Sans got up quickly and pushed you against the wall, holding the splintered pole against your neck.

"give me one good reason why i shouldn't kill you right now," the skeleton growled.

"I... Er..." you wracked your brain trying to think of a response, but your mind had gone totally blank.

"...I...have food?" you said nervously.

Sans's eyesockets flattened slightly. Looked like you were too stupid to be a threat. He lowered the pole and tossed it into the floor, backing away from you and taking in his surroundings.

"...ok, nice to meet you too, I guess," you said under your breath.

"...do you have any ketchup?" the skeleton asked. You could see a slight blush on his face even though he was turned away from you.

"There's some in the fridge, why?" you responded.

Sans walked into the kitchen and opened your fridge, grabbing the first red bottle he saw. Your eyes widened as he chugged as much of it as he could in one swig.

He seemed equally as surprised- perhaps more so- when red began to seep through the bottom of his sweatshirt.

Sans stood there, confused for a moment, before he finally remembered that human food had substance (unlike monster food, which was purely magic). That meant he'd have to summon an actual digestive system any time he wanted to eat something.

He'd forgotten, having spent the past 723 resets underground, watching everyone die over and over. His eyes sockets grew darker as he thought about it.

You sat on the couch looking at him in silence for a few moments. He looked at the floor, unmoving. Did he not know he was a skeleton...?

After a little while you spoke up. "Do you, uh, want a change of clothes or something?" you asked, glancing at the skeleton's dusty and condiment-stained jacket. He didn't respond.

"I'll take that a a yes," you said, getting up to search your room for something that might fit him.
