Oneshot: Life hurts in many ways
>>~~~~~~~~<<
It was at the day of Theo and I's 15 years anniversary, that we found out about our daughter's suffering.
We knew that Amy had had some tough years of school, but we never ever thought it went that bad that she would end up cutting herself. She would always tell us that she was happy now, that the bullies had stopped. And of course we believed her, because she was always happy, made her homework and did well in school. And we trusted her.
We found out, when she in an age of sixteen years old, was helping Theo cook for when my and Theo's parents, Miles, Zoë and Ansel, would come and celebrate our anniversary with us later the same day.
It was winter, therefore we didn't find it strange that she was always wearing long sleeved shirts. I hate myself, so much, for not noticing that something was wrong, that she was struggling with bullies again and had been so for a long time.
"Dad?!" She called out. "Can you help me?"
Theo walked into the kitchen and rolled up his sleeves, he walked to stand by her side, "of course."
Amy looked at her father, "will you help me knead this?"
The last weeks, after she had begun to help me cook, she had been very interested in baking and cooking. She was busy baking a bread for our guests, and she insisted on doing it all by herself.
"Sure," Theo said. "Let me roll these up," he reached out for her arms to roll up her sleeves, but she quickly pulled her arms away from him.
"No," she said definite, her eyes looked panic-struck.
Theo looked at her, confused, and she avoided his worried gaze. Aware that something was wrong, he reached out for her arm again.
Amy let go of a sob and let her arms fall down by her sides, making flour stand in a cloud at her thighs, and Theo pulled up her sleeve.
The sound Theo made, made me lie down the knife I used to cut vegetables with, and turn around.
Theo lifted up Amy, bridal style, and carried her to the living room. Curios of what was going on, I followed them, not knowing that my life would soon be changed forever.
On the way to the couch, Amy buried her face into her dad's shoulder and cried.
"D-dad..."
Theo sat her down on the couch and sat down by her side, he pulled up the other sleeve, his face expression unreadable, then I saw what the matter was.
Long, thin scars, most of them still red, covered our daughters forearms, those kind of scars that you only get by self harming.
Everything inside of me split into pieces, my heart seemed to burst into slivers. I covered my mouth with a hand, tears filling up my eyes, and sat down by Amy's side.
Theo couldn't hold back the tears as he ran a finger over his daughter's arm, he wrapped his arms around her and embraced her. His strong arms were wrapped around her thin body, and he ran his hand through her hair and looked at me with tears in his eyes over her shoulder.
Amy's shoulders shook, her sobs filled up the room, making me cry even more.
I leaned forward and wrapped my arms around my daughter and husband, as well as I could due to my seven months pregnant belly.
Yes, I was pregnant again, with two girls. Lukas, our three year old son, was overly excited about getting another two sisters.
Theo's hand travelled from Amy's neck, to the back of her head, stroking her hair. Soon, he pulled back and looked at our daughter.
