Chapter 11: The Gift

The party was starting to quiet down and it was time for me to open my gifts. I sat down in my "special chair" to open them. I got several gift cards, a shirt, and some money from my cousins. The second to last gift I opened was Mary's. It was a journal. Not just a journal, but it was for me to write down my adventures in the last year of my life, and on the first page was a collage of pictures with the two of us. One was a picture from second grade, when we first met. Then my parents gave their present, which was at the front of the house. I couldn't believe it. It was a NEW CAR! It was red, and had dark, cloth seats. And last but not least was Masons gift. It was a keychain with my initial on it. That's when I found out that Mason and my dad ran into each other at the grocery store last week. That's how he knew about the car. Anyway, I noticed that the keychain had a little charm. On the back of it, it had a quote that said "don't let the fear of what is going to happen in the future, keep you from doing great things now." I stared at it and thought about my cancer and my life. I may not people able to stop the cancer from spreading, but I can keep it from ruining my life.
People were starting to leave and some stuck around to help clean up. "Hey, Mason come with me." He grabbed my hand and we snuck inside and up the stairs to my room. We sat on my bed, and stared out the window at the stars.then we discussed my cancer a little. "April. Your time is running out, and I don't know what to do."
"I know. I'm going to miss you, but this was planned for me and I will go when I'm called." I had to do all I could to fight the tears, and I could tell that Mason did the same. For the rest of the time we sat there, his arm around me, and looking at the stars wondering what to do when I go.
