“Amber? Amber, look at me!” I hear the sound of Suárez’s panicked voice as she shakes me, but my eyes don’t focus.
I look at the ceiling and chant.
My baby. Ian. Ava. Nova. Daniel. Mike. Carl. Suárez.
“Yes, it’s me.” She says, soothingly, touching y face. “Fucking look at her! How could you be so stupid?” She yells at someone.
Someone else is here?
“She was begging me for it. Right, nena? You begged me to give you a stronger dose to get your fix?” My head spins. I begged?
“That was hours ago! She’s still in some sort of trance.” Suárez says, placing my head on her lap and rocking.Angelina laughs and the sound makes me nauseous.
I throw up and heave, breathless with the horrible burning at the back of my throat.
“Tuerto, clean this mess up.” I hear Angelina bark before my eyes focus on the horrible, peeling ceiling. I look around and squinting, find Suárez looking down at me. Relief softens her strong, beautiful features. She is even paler.
I’ve been scared that I will wake up to her being dead someday. Her arm is almost completely purple and I am no doctor, but I know that is not a good sign.
I hear shuffling and water being thrown on the floor. Some of it splashes us and I take a deep breath.
It’s the first bath I have in months. I reach down and touch my slightly swollen belly. Despite the poor meals, my baby has grown. Just a tiny bit.
Tuerto gives me a look letting me know he will be back tonight and then leaves with Angelina.
He’s been back almost every night to use me.
I hate those nights.
But sometimes he uses Suárez instead.
I hate those the most.
“How much time has passed now, Suárez?” She sighs, putting her hand on my belly, then on my forehead.
“It has been three months.” I sit up all too quickly, panicked. No…It can’t be.
“My baby is going to die…she’s going to kill it soon. She told me so.” She shushes me and pulls me against her chest.
“Let’s remember them, Amber. Let’s do it together.” I nod and we say them together.
“The baby. Ian. Ava. Nova. Daniel. Mike. Carl. Suárez.” She adds me to her list after I say her name, as usual.
“I love you, Suárez.” I whisper, enjoying the feel of her hand in my hair. She puts her chin on my head.
“And I you, Amber.” She whispers back.
We hear the sound we hate the most: the goddamned door.
Except when they bring me drugs. I like it when they do that.
And I hate myself for it.
“Carajo! Tuerto, go kill them! Kill them!” Angelina screams closing the door. I sit beside Suárez who smirks. I follow her gaze and see Angelina holding onto her thigh.
Blood is rushing out of the wound.
Did one of her own betray her?
Angelina turns her gaze to me and scowls.
“Your daddy is here. He wants to recue you.” My head is spinning and it has nothing to do with heroine. She begins to stalk towards me. “Your daddy put this bullet in me.”
