Violet

"Dinner?" Lina asks me as I run my fingers through my hair, looking at myself in the mirror.

After Ian left to clean up, I did too. I went in the women’s locker room, showered and put on a loose wine colored shirt and black leggings, followed by flats that match my top. My hair shouldn't stand out against the color, yet its color still does.

“Yes.” I say, turning around to look at her. She smirks as she puts her curls in a pony tail.

“I would tell you to go for it, but knowing you, you are already talking yourself out of it.” My brows furrow.

“What do you mean?” She scoffs.

“Don’t play dumb. I know you like I know the palm of my hand. You like him, so you will talk yourself out of starting something with him.” She moves to look at herself in the mirror I was using, ignoring my frown completely.

“Lina, you know more than that, so mind your own business.” She flinches as if my words slapped her.

“I know that Jordan will always haunt you, but it’s been eight years.” It is my turn to flinch.

“You know I don’t hold a grudge or dwell on that, but I just really don’t want to get involved with anybody. You know that.” She turns around, and looks at me in the eyes. God, she is restless.

“Violet, get your head out of your ass. He is crazy about you and you are about him! No seas estupida!” Don’t be stupid, she says. I roll my eyes, pick up my bag and leave.

I walk out of the locker room and make my way through the gym all the way to the entrance. I find Ava talking with a boy I know all too well.

Nathan.

She frowns at him, almost sadly. His brown hair is a mess of curls and his eyes are a brown so dark they seem black. His back is to me, but I can see his arms are crossed over his chest, in an angry gesture because he spits his words. She does not notice me.

“So you’re not coming with me today because you have plans with Nova?” he almost yells. “What the hell is wrong with you? You won’t put out and now you won’t go out with me? You turned into a boring bitch and I won’t have it. Are you even my girlfriend anymore? ” This he yells. I can see tears in her eyes and this time she sees me, then looks behind me and her eyes widen, letting a tear drop.

“The fuck she is!” Ian’s voice makes Nathan turn around. His eyes look up at the wall of muscle (a very sexy, angry wall) and express fear.

“Sir, I just…” Ian raises a hand.

“Get the fuck out, don’t contact Avalon again, you hear me?” Ian shouts. “And don’t you dare call her a bitch again, you’ll regret it.”

“Who the fuck you calling a bitch?” Oh, God. This just got worse. “I’m sorry, Ava.” Nova pushes past me and his uncle and his fist connects with Nathan’s face. Nathan turns his angry gaze to Nova and swings, hitting Nova’s left cheek. I almost want to smile at the look on Nathan's face, but Ava starts to sob.

“Please, Nova. Please.”  She pleads him as he shoves the boy, gets on top of him and punches him repeatedly. I wince at the blood that splashes on the floor with a crunch. Ava runs to me, hugs me and sobs into my neck. My arms wrap around her.

“ I. Warned. Him. Ava! Nobody. Calls. You. A. Bitch.”  He shouts between punches.

“Nova, stop!”  I yell when I see Ian does not say anything, just watches. I step closer to Ian and shake his shoulder, as a kid would do to their mother when they want something. “Tell him to stop.”  He looks down at me, and at his niece clings to me.
