Violet
"Did anybody else completely freak out when Rebecca pushed Uncle's chair?" Ava asks, looking around the tree, deciding where she will place the ornament on her hand. I had to sit. We had gone shopping and began decorating the entire house. Hoping around with the cast worn me out. Ian is behind me, rubbing my neck and shoulders. I would protest, but it feels to damn good.
Nova and Kelly are helping her, Nova with five ornaments in his hand, not knowing what to do, Kelly with a bright smile and a hand on her lower back.
"I did." I admit. Kelly looks at Nova, hoping for an explanation.
"Rebecca had told me something about spending time with him...I was just as shocked looking at them...interact, you know?" Ian says making Nova laugh and look at Kelly.
"You know Uncle Mike, the mechanic?" He asks her.
"Yeah, you told me he was in a wheel chair." She says, rubbing her belly. Being with her all day has been bittersweet. I love having her over, knowing she's okay, but I just can't help but think that I would have a belly just like that now if...I need to stop thinking about this.
"Mhm. Well, he hated this one friend of my Dad's and lately, they don't have each other so much. He's hard on us for trying to help him, pushing his chair and all of that, but with her...he's just okay with it." He says with a smile. Kelly looks at us, then at him with the same smile she's been wearing all day.
"I imagine she must have given him hell if he doesn't even argue—" She stops, giving a startled gasp and touching her belly. I am immedietly terrified, so is Ava, who had turned around to grab an ornament from Nova.
"Are you okay?" She asks, putting her hand on Kelly's stomach. Her eyes wide and she removes her hand. "Holy shit! She's kicking!" We all laugh at Ava's outburst. Nova touches the belly and bends at the waist.
"Baby girl! You excited? It's Christmas. Santa's bringing you lots of gifts." Nova says and Kelly gasps and laughs. Nova raises her loose fitting shirt and touches her bare stomach. I actually see the skin move. Ava is mesmerized.
"She loves it when Nova talks to her. She always kicks for him." Kelly tells us. My eyes fill with tears and I try to hide it, but she notices. "Here, Violet. Feel." She says, walking over to me, sitting by my side. Ian's hands froze on my shoulders a while ago. He moves and sits beside me, watching as I reach and touch Kelly's baby bump. She places it at a certain spot.
"Talk to her." Nova tells me. I bend ever so slightly.
"Hey, little girl." I try to say, but nothing comes out. I clear my throat. "Hi, baby. Are you giving mommy a hard time sleeping, huh?" We wait for her to move. Nothing. "You like Nova? Will you move if he talks to you?" I gasp when my hand is bumped.
"She likes you." Kelly says with a smile. I look at Ian and take his hand, placing it on Kelly's stomach. "Talk to her, Mr. Hayden." She says.
Ian's eyes are glassy and wide, but he moves closer.
"Does she have a name?" Ian asks Kelly hoarsely.
"I can't decide." She says. Ian nods and looks at the stomach again, looking unsure.
"Uhm...Hey, baby girl! How is it in there?" Ian asks, massaging Kelly stomach. "Is a certain little girl in there?" He asks and then his mouth smiles his biggest, most beautiful smile. "Kick for me so Nova knows you like another man." He says and Kelly throws her head back, laughing. She kicked.
We all laugh and Ian removes his hand, sitting back. Ava had moved to sit on the floor in front of Kelly, to get a better look. She now looks at her Dad. I look at him too and find he's wiping tears from his eyes.
