A black cat steps out of the rainforest's shadow. Its obsidian eyes are sorrowful. Bethany, what have you done?
The girl in the black cloak raises her head. Emerald eyes burn with amusement. "I didn't think you'd come, Onyx," she muses. "You know I have no problem with killing you."
You must take your heart back, Bethany. Rikamu will return it if you wish it so.
"But I do not wish it so." Her words are incredulous, hostile. "I should leave if I were you. Not many dare to stand so close to me these days."
You would not harm me.
"Wouldn't I?" She curls the words around her tongue, wetting them with sweet darkness. "You are right. I am not going to kill you. You are the last of your kind, after all."
The cat retreats into the shadows. Its eyes melt into the blackness. Bethany, it says. I will never forget you.
