I sit there, stunned.

I can't be seeing this.

There must be some other explanation.

Addy flings the door open and jumps out of the cart before I can stop her. "Ruby," she shrieks, "what are you doing?!"

Ruby regards her hungrily. "You are interrupting my meal." Her voice is slow and measured. Velvety-smooth. Her eyes blaze coldly.

I leap after Addy, my hand gripping her shoulder before she can go any closer.

"You...you killed someone." Addy's gaze moves to the corpse, now devoid of life energy. "Ruby, why?"

Ruby chuckles quietly. There are streaks of gold in her plum hair. "Ruby," she says, as if she's trying the word out on her tongue. "I have never been called a ruby before."

Tears are streaming down Addy's cheeks.

"Then what are you usually called?" My knees wobble, but I try to keep my voice steady.

A thoughtful look comes over Ruby's face. She raises a finger to her chin, and the movement is graceful, almost elegant.

"Amitabh," she says. "I am called Amitabh."
