THE DARK AGES (500-600 years in the past)
ALICIA

The shadow of the spindle glinted with the steady tap of translucent fingernails. Laughter sparkled on aubergine lips.

A curse was being woven, and she couldn't stop it. None of them could. They had done wrong, she knew. Her mother. Her father. Even herself. Especially herself.

But no one deserved this.

She could feel her arms turning heavy, like wool. A single tear slipped down her cheek.

The entire village had burned, but her family was spared. She had hidden behind a barrel, awaiting the kiss of flames, when green eyes had fixed on her, and aubergine lips had curled into a sneer.

Her mother and father were no longer crying. Her sisters were fixed to the spot, their eyes glassy. She wondered what happened to him, the one in the attic. She listened for his familiar scraping. It didn't come.

Her knees buckled, and she folded to the floor. Her mother gave one last sob before joining her.

All the while the nails kept tapping, tapping, and laughter burned in the Dark Witch's eyes.
