"Ew. Definitely not." I giggle as JD's current suit is automatically vetoed by Chandler. He sighs, tugging on his collar.
"I don't get how people can stand this...," he mutters, looking at himself in the mirror. He spins in a slow circle, examining himself. "It's not me."
"It isn't. So try on the last one." He goes into the back room, and we wait for a few minutes while he gets on the last suit. Right after school, Chandler and Duke picked us up and brought us to a fancy store for men's formal wear. They promised to get to a women's one after we finished up here. I glance at Veronica, giving her a tired smile. She bites her lip.
"After Mr Emo is done, we just need y/n to try on her stuff." She smiles at me. "Isn't that right?" I nod.
"Yeah, yeah." She scoffs and turns back to her phone. JD finally exits, adjusting the black lapel of the jacket. I examine him. "Not bad, Dean."
"Yeah?" I smile.
"Yeah. It suits you." I stand, adjusting his tie. "There we go." I smooth out the shirt. "Damn, JD. You actually might be hot under all the teen angst."
"Oh, be quiet." I laugh softly. Something about seeing my friend in this suit is comforting. It feels as if, even though he doesn't like how it fits, he's found a place to do more than be an outsider. And if he can do that, so can I.
"Your boyfriend looks quite nice, no?" I whip around to look at the employee.
"Oh. I- Uh... Boyfriend?" I stammer. She smiles a bit.
"Is this fine gentleman not your boyfriend?"
"No!" I blurt out, slightly louder than intended. "No. No, he's just a friend." She laughs into her hand.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, positively," Veronica says, suddenly at my side. Her hand comes to a rest on the small of my back, pulling me ever so slightly closer. I feel my pulse shoot through the ceiling, my breath catching. She seems to realize what she's doing, because she moves away and clears her throat.
"Is that the final decision, then?" The employee asks. Duke and Chandler both stand, nodding. Mac follows shortly after.
"I'll pay," all three Heathers say. They fall into silence. I snicker.
"Guys. One of you can pay for JD, another can pay for me." The three of them seem to get into a bit of a staring match. Duke sits down, sighing.
"I'll pay for you, y/n," Mac says with a smile.
"And I'll pay for Jesse James," Chandler says. JD raises an eyebrow.
"We have fairy godmothers, y/n."
"Shut up, Dean," Chandler mutters. She reaches into her bag, grabbing her wallet and taking out a credit card. As JD goes to change, Chandler goes to pay. I settle beside Mac, my nerves still slightly on edge from Veronica's touch.
"Y/n?" I glance over at Veronica. She looks at me, slightly concerned.
"What?"
"You look worried." I shake my head.
"It's nothing." She gently pats my knee.
"Okay." God, why am I so jittery today? She slides closer. "So, what are you thinking for colours?" I shrug.
"I don't know." She nods, examining me up and down.
"Well, I know you'll look good in whatever we find for you. You're just that stunning, y/n." Heat prickles at my cheeks.
