There was a point when Draco got home after the train ride when he realized something. Everything Harry Potter said about Lord Voldemort being back was true. He didn't believe him until he came home to find his father making a toast with several Death Eaters.
His stomach went hollow, he could feel the color draining from his cheeks. His mother took his hand taking him away from the drawing-room, up to his room carrying one of his bags.
He'd made it up to his room to find his owl sitting at his window sill, pecking at the glass, a small box hung around his neck.
Jogging over to the window he opened it, the owl flying in then sitting at his desk.; taking the small box from the owl he tossed the lid off to find a shiny pin resting on a velvet case.
"What's that?" His mother asked, peeking over his shoulder.
"Prefect pin."
"Draco, that's wonderful!" Narcissa grinned, massaging his shoulders.
Draco simply shrugged. "It's alright, I guess."
He had too much on his mind to be excited over a pin, he thought about Faris, he thought about the return of Lord Voldemort.
Draco then realized he wouldn't be able to see Faris as much as he was hoping for this summer. He couldn't let her know what was happening behind closed doors.
He wanted her to know him as the sarcastic, infamous Draco that cared for her. Not the Draco whose father was tied to the Dark Lord.
But he still wrote to her every chance he could get.
Dear Draco,
I miss you, I fear I won't be able to write as much as I hoped for this summer. Turns out my schedule is booked full with mum's catalog. I'll be doing more modeling work with her which is very exciting. (At least on my part.)
How have you been? Do you get to see Blaise or Flint very often?
Pansy made a point to me and I'm starting to think that she's right, would you please be one hundred percent honest answering this? I don't care if you hurt my feelings, I just need to know. Pansy told me I took everything from her, her friends, her life, and you. She told me that by joining your group I ruined everything. I'm starting to believe her now. I took her friends, I took her place in the group and I took you. I knew how much you meant to her. And I can't help but wonder if she is right.
But do you think it's at all possible for you to come as my date to a Charity Ball? It is supposed to take place next Friday at three.
It's our chance to see each other. Bouilloire's mum is hosting it. If you can't come that's perfectly fine, I just thought it would be fun. You would have to wear a tuxedo if you came. Whatever works for you. (Please don't feel guilty if you can't come. I don't want you to come if it will make you uncomfortable either.)Love, Faris
Dear Faris,
I miss you too. I'm happy you're happy, I know how much you love working with your mum. I've been fine, I don't get to see Blaise or Flint very often. It seems like there is always something going on in the Manor that stops me from having freedom. I'm unable to control the world though, which is a bit disappointing on my part, no matter how selfish that sounds I wish I could.
Unfortunately, I can't make it to the Charity Ball. It wouldn't make me feel uncomfortable by the way. If it had been on Thursday or Saturday I might've been able to make it. I'll make it up to you though, I promise. I don't know how or when, but I will.
And no you didn't take everything from Pansy, we welcomed you into our group with no regrets. And again, no, you didn't take me away from Pansy, I was never her property in the first place.
She just needs to realize not everything is about her.
How have you been? Your summer is definitely more interesting than mine, and I'm getting bored at the Manor. I might be able to sneak out at night if you want?(I already feel guilty about not being able to go to the Charity Ball, so there is no turning back.)
Love, Draco
Draco told his mother all about Faris. He told her everything from the day he met her to saying goodbye to her.
Narcissa listened to everything her son had said remembering every detail because she knew how much Faris meant to him. She also knew that he never opened up to people like this. It was a very rare occasion for him to talk about his feelings.
But the entire summer, his feelings for Faris seemed to be the only thing he talked about. He went as far as to beg Narcissa to let him transfer to Beauxbatons just to be with her.
She gave the response every mother gave to her child.
"I'll talk to your father about it," she said.
And she did talk to Lucius, telling him about how Draco felt so he had a good enough reason to say yes.
"The boy doesn't know what he wants yet." Lucius had said. "He'll be over this french girl in a matter of weeks."
"He is your son and he is finally happy. I'm all in for sending him to Beauxbatons, this girl clearly means a lot to him.""It's a simple school crush. Everyone had one at some point. He'll get over it. He's a Malfoy."
"That doesn't mean he doesn't have any feelings, Lucius. I just want him to be happy." Narcissa said, her voice cracking.
Lucius swung his head back, swallowing his whiskey. "He's staying at Hogwarts. I already let him attend that filthy school just for your sake."
Narcissa let out a breath leaving the room.
That same night Narcissa went into Draco's room. He simply just looked at her, eyes full of hope.
She shook her head, a frown taking over her face.
His face fell, shoulders slumping. He nodded, murmuring a small, "okay."
Narcissa didn't leave his room that night. She laid with him on his bed and he showed her the pictures of Faris that she gave to him for Christmas. He showed her the magazines that he kept.
He told her about the necklace and the Ball. And by three in the morning, Draco was falling asleep. His head lolling onto his mum's lap. Narcissa smiled, brushing the hair off his forehead. The last time he was this vulnerable was when he was Younger. Narcissa would read to him he would fall asleep in her arms, she would let him sleep in their bed even when Lucius said no. If he had ever gotten hurt while wandering around the garden she was always there to heal his wounds.
She never wanted Draco to be alone. She wouldn't let it happen.
She leaned down and kissed his forehead with tears in her eyes. She scribbled on a piece of scrap parchment and put it on his nightstand. She pulled the duvet over the both of them leaning against his pillows.
She looked through the pictures with Draco asleep on her lap. A smile curled on her lips when she found the picture of Faris and Draco dancing together at the Ball.
In the late morning, Draco had woken up on his mum's lap. He sat up away from her touch, rubbing his eyes.
He read the note his mum left for him when she left to go get him breakfast.
I'm sorry that Lucius said no. I know how happy she makes you. If you ever need someone to talk to when you're at Hogwarts I'm always here. You can always owl me. I love you, and I'll miss you.
